Controversy?

Conclusion: Aspergers dont reach out to support forums, socially inept do.

Based on my own observation and statistics i think few of you are even 'aspie', your just unfit for society
I see no reason for aspergers to collaborate on a support forum - true aspies dont like support from other people anyway.

I'm guessing 1 in 10 wrongplanet members are aspie.

Extreme male brain theory ftw.

What about those of us who come here for trolling purposes.

I dunno man, but I'm venting because you guys are not much like me at all.

It's fact too, i think this forum is mainly used by the parent or guardian of an asperger child, or one with social difficulties.

I don't see many science geeks or math nerds, engineers are about as rare here as they are anywhere.

not everyone on wp is aspie,so not every person can be expected to show typical aspergan stereotypes.
wp has members with:
aspergers, kanners [on all levels],pddnos, adhd,'on the spectrum' [eg,not autistic enough for a specific label, but is still on the spectrum],learning disabilities or difficulties, nvld,nt,apd, personality disorders, pyschiatric illness.........or a mix of different conditions.

there are many different recognised 'types' of aspergers, not all aspergans are the classic stereotypical personality type, but that doesn't mean they are lesser aspie.

Hello, Senator McCarthy. Out hunting the "fake Aspies" again? By the logic you gave, you aren''t an Aspie because if you were you wouldn't be here. Grow up, get over your paranoia that we've been infiltrated by "socially inept fake Aspies."

The opening post is certainly one that got my attention, but not in a good way.

Husband and I are both aspie, and we did have a child: we have a teenager. He's great. He's intelligent, he has a lot of friends, he plays a lot of sport, he's having a great life. He does have a disability of his own, but he's playing to his advantages and with a good school and lots of support and modern technology, I see no reason why he can't do anything that he so wishes.

Yes, on the spectrum of autism and related conditions, there is a lot of suffering. I've had some years of my life when I've struggled just to survive, let alone enjoy it. But I learned....and I learned mostly to play to my strengths, and it works in the end.

I also know a heck of a lot of NT parents who are utterly hopeless: Cruel or neglectful beyond belief. I don't think being Aspie means you're bound to be a poor parent or that your children will have the same experiences of life as we did.

If people need extra support and find that there's none out there, that's a failing of society, not of the person who needs the support. What we need to do is to ensure that society provides the right support to help any parent, whether NT or AS, to do their best, and helps all children to feel valued and loved for what they are. Wouldn't that be something worth the effort?

I know my statement about aspies not having children could be construed as being provocative, especially since some of you claim to have kids, but I honestly believe people like us shouldn't reproduce.

In my case, whenever I think about having kids, I ask myself some of the following questions (and these are just hypothetical questions, as I'd first need to find a woman to reproduce with, which so far seems like an extremely difficult task to accomplish):

1) Why would you want to bring kids to this world to suffer the way you suffered?
2) Why would you want to degenerate the human gene pool even further?
3) Given my neuropsychological condition, am I really fit to raise a child?
4) Given all my flaws and defects, what example will I give my children?

So what do you all think about the way I think in regards to "aspergean reproduction"? Are my views too negative?

(I hope I did not offend anyone with my comments.)

From suffering comes strength. The fundamental thing here is, you see being an aspie as being profoundly disabled. But there is a very positive aspect. If anything, we're higher on the evolutionary chain.
Whether you can be a parent is up to you as a person. AS is a big part of who you are, but you are you, not aspie, if you catch my drift.
I'll tell you, up through middle school life was hell, but I am so happy to be alive today. I'm proud to be an aspie.

What part of "spectrum" don't you understand? "Real aspies don't like support forums?" You're worse than the NT's!

evilmonkey, if you compare this forum to NT ones, then you will notice that there is a distinct lack of social propping and soothing going on in the threads. Each of our posts are an island unto itself.

Doesn't somebody have a percentage on them? I really think we should factor THAT in, don't you?

PS...please tell me we aren't going to have to have ANOTHER pogrom for fake Aspies...crematorium 4 REALLY isn't in any shape to take it right now...

Evilmonkey, I have an immediate disliking to you.

After all the reading I've been doing lately, especially here, I am reasonably sure I am an Aspie, and that my father is as well. But I will speak here as someone with another spike on the spectrum...Tourette's Syndrome.

Evilmonkey, you are doing to us exactly what the NTs have tried to do to us all of our lifetimes. You're taking a cookie cuter and expecting each of us to fit into it's boundries. Even worse, you're taking the sterotypes of a disease YOU claim to have and forcing them on a drop of diverse people. Spectrum. Look it up. Learn, it use it, love it.

And a final point...if there was one, sterotyped, very definitive set of behaviors for Aspergers, wouldn't diagnosis be a hell of a lot easier then? If every person with AS was the same, then people wouldn't be misdiagnosed, etc. Agreed?

I don't think anybody should have kids. Humanity needs to die.

For some reason there seems to be hate towards math and science in this forum too.

I agree with your observations.

How do you figure? WHO hates math/science. I'm no FAN of math, but I don't HATE it.

He also hates people that aren't good at math and say they don't like it because they aren't good at it so they are automatically his "enemy".

I thought aspies were highly intelligent, very good at math and science, but then I came to this forum and read dozens of messages from people claiming to be aspies admitting they went to special ed classes in grade school or had to drop out of college because of their condition. Of course, academic achievement and intelligence are two different things, but let's just say that I came here expecting a slightly different crowd.

I know, I am not good at putting positive spins to my observations.

Exactly, I thought the way an AS mind works would be conducive to technical fields.
