Yea. The problem is it all comes down to subjective values.

Exactly. That's why I've stopped arguing with ruveyn about most things. There is no getting around the fact that all of our convictions flow from entirely different sets of moral principles. If I'm not mistaken, TM's avatar is a picture of Adam Smith (I think?????), so there is no use in my trying to argue with him about why I view the free market as flawed.

My avatar is Thomas Paine.

Apologies.

Any American who values his liberty should read -Common Sense- at least once a year.

Thomas Paine figured out what government really is. The lesser evil used for protecting one's poperty.

Keep in mind that the lesser evil is still an evil.

Problem 1: Free markets tend to produce "excess" profits, which are then used to produce more "excess" profits. To hell with society !

Problem 2: Governments try to regulate free markets in order to protect and better society as time passes. Governments are by nature bureaucratic and ineffective.

Problem 2 must be addressed so governments can complement free markets while still doing their function. Free markets will hopefully then realize that governments can be their partners for profits (taxes for education, infrastructure, product safety, etc. are merely an investment for all) then society will be progressing for everyone. Bottom line governments must show they can be both efficient and effective.

In th U.S. this is difficult because Democrats are too timid to stop patronizing government and union workers. In addition, when Republicans yell "Socialism", the Democrats run to a corner and shake like a petrified puppy.

I don't think supporting the capitalist system is a requirement for valuing ones liberty which is if I remember right what that document is about......I won't say the intentions of that document were ill, however based on my opinions I imagine I would disagree with a lot of what's put forth in Common Sense, I'd have to take a look at it again though as last time I read it was in 8th grade and I cannot remember the specifics.

Without the right to acquire and dispose of property liberty is empty. Especially if the property is arable land. Suppose the government were in complete charge of food production and distribution. Then in order to eat you had damned well better obey the government.

What makes you think I want the government to have even more control over food production and distribution?...the government and corporate america seem to be doing a fine job of shutting down small farms and trying to limit what produce people can have so that the corporate farms/slaughterhouses can take over thus providing less healthy meet then a traditional outside farm where the animals get to well be animals....... because the corporate farms and government needs more money regardless of how that effects the small farms. I wonder how things would be without the government, and the large corporations/CEOs of them that get their way because they can give the government more money.

Have you seen any Americans starving lately? And one can eat healthy. Visit the nearest fresh veggie and fruit stand.

Well I was talking about meat there not veggies, I never made any indication I wouldn't go to the fruit and veggie section, though I would argue fresh veggies not from the store are probably better and don't run the risk of having nasty chemicals on it. But yeah if you think fruits and vegetables alone are a healthy diet you must not know much about nutrition.

It is possible for one to get the nessisary nutirients, but no it is not always possible to eat 'healthy'...But I like how I bring up the government shutting down family owned farms in the name of corporate interests kind of oppressive if you ask me....and stealing someones farmland that they work hard to keep, to build a huge corporate farm that cannot even provide healthy meat? oh my shouldn't that be a crime? and you pretend that's not even an issue at all.

If there was a weaker or non-existant government and no huge corporations to fund them, there would be no one to take away peoples hard earned living.

Also not starving does not= eating healthy now does it.

The argument is in very summary form "If you do not have economic freedom, you do not have any other freedom". It then follows that a society in which government controls the economy, there will be no such thing as freedom.

But how much economic freedom do people really have in this society? I mean unless your extremely wealthy there's not exactly endless options. What it's turned into is peoples worth being measured by how much wealth they've accumulated. People are barred from many things due to not having enough money........it would seem maybe capitalism does not work so well for humans. I guess communism wasn't the only thing that failed when put into action.

There are non-wealthy people who are quite satisfied with their portion.

As I've stated before, the rich are indeed getting richer. My question still stands: What are you going to do about it?

I'll tell you what I've done. I only deal with my Credit Union. I don't shop at "big box marts" if I can help it; when possible, I try to buy things from companies that care about their workers. I buy my vehicles used and combine errands so that I don't waste fuel. I do my best not to fall into the trap of consumerism; I try not to impulse buy things which I don't absolutely need, and when I do, I look for value. While some things which I find "unfair" are admittedly beyond my control, I found that these practices improve my quality of life more than petitioning my elected officials to take away from those who have greater material wealth than me.

This isn't about me wanting more, hell I am quite fine with what I have....its about the issues that such a large class division create for the entire society. Also trying to provoke an emotional response from me by dismissing my opinions as 'whine, whine, whine.' seems a tad bit immature.

I have no problem with disagreements at all. I am disagreeable and I expect disagreement. No big deal.

Why complain about what is never going to change. A waste of breath and time.
