The Japanese culture lends some credence to the topic of the demise of guys as many young guys in Japan have lost interest in having sex with a human being and some focus instead on virtual girlfriends.

How do you reconcile this with the amount of pornography that Japan produces, and the ready availability of prostitutes?

What do you mean? Both of those things are substitutes for having sex with a human being. One is a machine, the other is a depersonalized, dehumanized sexuality.

Singles have far less sex than couples, on average. And that consists mostly of singles who engage in frequent casual sex, not ones who can only have sex with a machine or a prostitute. I would expect if we looked at that element exclusively, the amount of sex is practically negligible by comparison.

Not that the problem is just coitus, but even if it was ...

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Japan/NC13Dh01.html

According to the linked article above, from the Asia Times, 60% of teenage girls from the ages of 16 to 19, has no interest in sex at all in Japan. Boys of that age haven't completely lost it as about a third have no interest in sex at all.

The article linked above addresses the problem for females as one of viewing sex as aversive, in part, because that is how it is portrayed in the country.

They also extend the potential of the issue in Japan to the US, in a couple of decades. The comments in response to the article, are reflective again, of the comments defending pornography and accusing women as being the cause of the problem, instead, as has been the same case in the other articles in the US. What is talked about eventually happening in the US in the article appears to already be evidenced as happening, at least by anecdotal reports provided in the comments of the article.

There are other factors as well, addressed in Japan, per a previous post, and the fact that there is a requirement to work to survive in the competitive economy of Japan for males and females, and society doesn't provide benefits like other countries do for women to take a break to have a child. The country, per the previous post links, is starting to offer incentives for women to have children in Japan, but it doesn't appear to be working. The desire for sex is evidenced as not even present for many females, as well as some males.

More disturbing though, in the article is the comments on a culture that finds an aesthetic in suicide, and the number of unreported deaths, from people with no human contact, that go without notice, and require cleaning crews to take care of what remains of decomposing bodies.

Japan has become a nomadic society of loners. That is evidenced as not working well for human beings in the long run, per the work of cleaning crews. The US does appear to be headed in that direction in Urban areas, as the issue is more evidenced in Urban areas in Japan as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_Japan

In Japan the sex industry is not synonymous with prostitution, since coitus is not normally part of the services offered. And, of course virtual sex per pornography, does not include coitus, when enjoyed solo.

Quote:
In Japan, the "sex industry" is not synonymous with prostitution. Since Japanese law defines prostitution as "intercourse with an unspecified person in exchange for payment," most sex clubs only offer non-coital services to remain legal.[1] This has led Joan Sinclair, the author of Pink Box, to observe that the sex industry in Japan ironically "offer[s] absolutely everything imaginable but sex."[2]

I'm beginning to lose interest in sex altogether as well. And I turn to things like video games, manga, anime etc. Why? Because women want men to be mind readers. Unfortunately we do not live in the Roman times anymore as our minds have been changed and shaped and so have our societies as we become more disconnected from each other - only the strong, and uncouth survive. It is shown in 21 Jump Street as the two characters Jonah and Channing are compared to each other in terms of physical prowess. Channing gets all the women and Jonah is stuck in the friend zone and typed as the emotional character. When Jonah is on the phone, channing attacks Jonah for a breif period symbolizing manhood is knocking at the door and Jonah isn't waking up to it as he continues to talk about feelings on the phone with Molly. In Roman times the men would take control and approach the women. They might even hoot and hollar at them, and yes they were meant for child rearing as the men went off to work. Times have changed and everyone is becoming ignorant, desensitized, emotionless, broken, stressed, confused and ultimately lost. They give you a few different perspectives in 21 jump street in terms of your ability to attract a potential partner and your physical state. One character is built (channing) and has women FLOCKING to him. and another is merely in great shape and still has the ability to attract a lot of women, however Jonah has an impossible time attracting any potential mates due to his stature.

In having browsed through all the articles posted and such.......

I think it would be hard, imo, to separate the effects of technology from the effects of overcrowding in urban areas. Mammals are known to act screwy when you put too many of them into the same area. That said...

Society will adapt. Those that can't handle the rapid pace will simply be replaced by those that can. While the majority of society might be having a hard time, I know lots of people who are absolutely thriving, myself included, in this new technological society. Maybe it's just our day.

For one, I live in Christchurch, New Zealand, where we have both a combination of technology all over the place, and plenty of room for everyone. As an added bonus? With healthy, locally-grown food to feed us, low pollution due to strong environmental practices, and clean water from our collection of mountainous springs and such.

I didn't say all of those people would be thriving. They're probably not. Me, on the other hand, between frugal monetary practices, the rampant amounts of information online, and a local university, I'm soon to be graduated with a nice career in biology. I love to play video games, I love cellphones, I love technology and I immerse myself in it, and I continue to succeed at uni and my writing and all that jazz.

In other words, the technology isn't bothering me, if anything I'm having a blast with it, it's making my life better! My family seems to be doing just fine as well, my sis loves tech, she's more of a tech nerd than I am! She's got a job in the tech industry now, and is doing great. Some people just......adapt well to this new world.

Ahem... you mentioned the word family. I'm going to assume you have a lot to fall back on in terms of economic prosperity so don't go about boasting about technology and the betterment of society bud. Plus you live in NZ, so I wouldn't be commenting on economics until you're suffering from a real estate market crash

He wasn't talking about the betterment of society, just his ability to adapt to it.
Not every country is America, by the way. Some other countries are prosperous and developing. Heard of BRICS?
