I think more atheists should try a moderate viewpoint, and say they're "not sure" if there's some sort of god or afterlife. Atheists usually view religion in extreme-terms of disbelief with a know-it-all attitude about everything.

I'm not a religious person, but I'm not an atheist either. Just somebody that's undecided since there's no hard evidence either way.

In general I say yes; organised religion holds mankind back in many ways and its dogma is often used to repress various groups of people and especially those who don't share exactly the same flavour of each religion. I think Islam is the worst religion of them all in this regard, it suppresses free thought the most; followed by Christianity. Those two religions have been responsible for so much bloodshed over the centuries, so much suffering. The world and humanity would be far better off without the curse of organised religion.

islam SAVEd more than it destroyed. you seem ignorant on history. go look up the golden age of Islam before hating Islam's impact on the world

I see Islam's impact on the world every day in the news. Slayings, murders, suppression, torture, beheadings, severing of hands, imprisonment for trivialities, imprisonment or death of homosexuals, extreme sexism, taxation of non-believers, book burnings, suppression of knowledge and education. Sure is a golden age of Islam now. Islam is a sick disease; the scourge of humanity.

At least it's the truth, even if it is bleak.

And, without the mental prison of religion, we can feel free to enjoy life as it is, now, today.

And Islam is probably the only religion in the world today where evil clerical perverts feel free to say monstrous stuff like this, which happened in Saudi Arabia last week:

Quote:
Saudi Arabian cleric declares babies should wear burkas
  • A Saudi cleric's declaration that babies should wear burkas to protect them from sexual attacks has drawn widespread criticism.
Sheikh Abdullah Daoud said all female newborns should wear a full face veil in an interview with an Islamic television station.

He told al-Majd TV that wearing a burka would stop incidents of sexual attacks on babies, and tried to support his claim by quoting unnamed medical and security sources.

The interview took place last year, but it was picked up by Al Arabiya news and social media websites at the weekend, provoking outrage and comments that such claims damage the reputation of Saudi Arabia and Islam.

You know that I damn near had a coronary at that last part. What a comically, ludicrously un-self aware group of people.

I'm not sure how the reputation of Saudi Arabia or Islam could possibly be dragged any lower, to be honest with you.

That is the part of the world that brought us these primitive, vicious, scary things:

(Yes, I know it's a niqab and not a burqa, but it's still horrible.)

How does religious belief preclude enjoying the present? I'm a Messianic Jew and I'm enjoying it just fine. Is there something I could be enjoying now if I stopped believing in God?

I agree that it is excessive, but it is not horrible. Those women have more dignity than female "sex workers" who perform lewd acts in front of strangers for money. They are family oriented women, who do not graffiti their bodies with tattoos and bed multiple sex partners. They are actually quite healthy in comparison to modern day Westerners.

They should just wear ski-masks like their male counterparts.

They certainly hide the explosives better.

Should I post that story here that occurred just last week in London, where a niqab-clad person threw acid in the face of a Nigerian woman?

It would be on topic if it was done in the name of religion.

That's the thing - the motive for this sickening assault hasn't yet come out (and I doubt she will be identified, because she's dressed like Darth Vader). The Nigerian woman - apparently of Christian extraction - was apparently followed around for hours before she was attacked.

I'd be fascinated to hear the motive if there's any more information on this.

Grilled pork with sweet&sour sauce 8)
Or do Messianic Jews not keep to kosher food?
That's one (of many) things that would keep me from becoming muslim, not being allowed to drink or eat pork.

Lots of Muslims do drink, they're just not especially interested in the religious element of it but still keep the cultural/family side.

I know a muslim like that. I've also seen Roman Catholics who claim to be Roman Catholics but don't believe in god.
But the main reason I don't believe in those religions is because I think they are factually untrue

I eat non-kosher foods, but that's okay. The Law of Moses isn't a means to salvation.

According to Christopher Hitchins, Johnny Walker Scotch is the favorite brand of Scotch in the House of Saud.
