Genetically engineering plants doesn't make them unhealthy.

Sure people regularly raise themselves out of poverty, but it's much more possible with opportunities of jobs, which are lacking in the inner city.
And as far as businesses avoiding poor neighborhoods because of the crime rate - it was business that had created the situation in the first place by deserting those neighborhoods when blacks came in. They would be demonstrating genuine courage and community spirit by relocating in the inner city in order to give the people there a hand up. My friend who was the best man at my wedding runs a business in a bad neighborhood in Spokane, and guess what, he has never had any problem with crime, other than occasionally running off the random crack head. So, yes, running a business in a poor neighborhood is doable - but most businesses don't, coming up with one excuse after another to justify their prejudice.

If businesses left the inner cities it's because they were driven out by crime or lack of revenue being made in those locations.
I know the concept is alien to you but a business's first reason for being in business is to make money.

And business owners aren't going to be influenced by the very human fault of racism? Are you saying the change in complexion of the neighborhood had nothing to do with it? I suppose business people are demigods, so much better than the rest of us. :P

Give them at least the benefit of the doubt for being more greedy than racist. They are business owners after all and by that virtue most of them put their cash register before their white sheets and burning crosses.

I had no idea there are European dishes out there that include on shawarma; cheese with shawama sounds odd to me, and fries and garlic sauce are only used with the chicken shawarma.

They put tahini sauce with meat shawama sandwich over here (and vegetables).

Left meat, right chicken.

Shoarma is quite popular here now. Often as a late night snack before or after a night of drinking beer, some of those shoarma joints have outrageous opening hours. Usually people eat shoarma with round pita bread and garlic sauce. Not sure what meat they use (in supermarkets pork shoarma is quite common because pork is cheap, probably not so much in the ME). It's often made by immigrants or their descendants. The largest immigrant groups from the Middle-east are Moroccans and Turks. Quite a few Christian Arabs too, I was surprised to hear of an Egyptian studying here called Yohannes (which is a pretty common name here too) because it rarely occurs to people that many Dutch names have a biblical origin.

The pictures you posted look somewhat similar to Turkish lamacun, which is sort of a pizza-like wrap filled with meat and vegetables.

Oh wow :o Those are some insane portion sizes- and there are fries everywhere and in great quantity. The U.S. has that same portion problem. France does not have that portion problem. It may be why they are thinner.

I googled 'obesity in Lebanon' and got many articles.

Welcome to the club. We've got fries....and now so do you.

But if the French are pretty smug about their status as the skinniest people eating awesome food, that status is slipping.

It's a shame because those French culinary traditions did allow for fantastic food----it's just in very small portions. Fantastic food in small portions seems to be a good weight control tool. Good thing you did not eat the whole platter you posted.

Let's reach a happy medium and call them greedy racists.

Hence why I've left half the portion; I won't ever want to become fat.

This specific restaurant is known for giant portions tho.

I think the introduction of...well...American fast food contributed in the rise of obesity.

Try eggs with olive oil, not fried with it tho because it's extremely unhealthy when olive is fried.

Canola is the healthiest for frying.

I'm going to be the contrarian and post some healthy food. Hutspot met rookworst, it's mashed potatos/carrots/onions. Don't eat the sausage, it will kill you because it's mostly fat. Easy to make, just throw some cut up potatoes/carrots/onions in a pan (or pressure cooker) and mash them after boiling. I'm joking about the sausage, just eat it because YOLO.

Considering that not everyone's metabolisms are the same, but speaking for myself, the Paleo diet has been very successful for me - lots of meat (and not just lean meat by any means) and fruits and vegetables - or in other words, eat like our Paleolithic and Mesolithic ancestors had. So far, I've lost weight and lowered my blood sugar considerably so that my doctor considers my diabetes to have been cured. I admit, I do cheat and consume dairy products, which were not part of the Paleolithic regimen, but I have cut down on my bread portions, and have excluded potatoes from my diet - those last two turn to sugar as soon as it hits your system. So while olive oil is great, I have no fear of bacon grease.
