I don't ask my mother too much about these people; there were traumas associated with these people.

I hear you. Same reason I never asked my family about their pasts and histories. Things were hard for them. It seemed unfair to make them relive those times simply to satisfy my curiosity.

It was the exact opposite for me. My dad filled my head with family history. Not all of it was happy, but it's still my family's history.

That sounds satisfying. I know very, very little about my family's history on either side. They truly didn't want to speak about it much. Most of it is secondhand information from my parents that they were told by their parents. There's virtually nothing about my Mother's Irish family. We don't even know what part of Ireland my great grandfather came from, we just know he came over around the time of the famine. I have no idea about her Mother's parents, I knew they were farmers here but other than knowing they came from Scotland and Ireland we have no idea about anything else.

My wife's family, particularly on her dad's side, was very closed lipped about their history.

Every time I used to watch the "Honeymooners" as a young kid, I used to really get the feeling that the characters really suffered.  I had a great uncle, Julius, who looked (and dressed) just like Ed Norton.

Of course they suffered. The Kramdens and the Nortons were working class families. Working class families always suffer while simultaneously being blamed for societies ills and economic problems. It's like adding insult to injury.
