It was always going to be political. If the vote was by secret ballot, Trump might have been convicted, but with the votes being public, few Republican Senators would want to be seen as voting against a Republican.

Its just bread and circuses.

No, the lucky escape for democracy was the failure of the Trumpian riot, as well as the failure to overturn the election.

Well, since the precedent has been set that a former president can be impeached let’s bring Obama to trial next!

For what, exactly? I don't recall Obama trying to overturn a fair and legal election, up to and including inciting an armed lynch mob storming the capitol.

Well, as long as you guys fan the hate, America will never heal.
No real skin off my nose since I am here in Australia.

If the red state does invade, I will probably have moved on from "this mortal coil" without kids left behind. Meh.
Not my problem. 8)

The right is still kindling the fire, as they've been censoring fellow Republicans who had voted to impeach Trump, and those who refused to change the outcome of the last election.

And judging what is happening here the left is helping to stoke the fires, also.

As I said, it isn't my problem.
I just can't believe the cyclopean partisanship that I am seeing.
I have never seen anything/k like it in my life.
Fascinating.

I am starting to get bored, though.
I will leave you guys to it.

44 Republicans said it was unconstitutional to convict a former president.

And their votes were an act of cowardice, fearing the state level Republican party, who are beholden to Trump, would censure them if they were not to vote otherwise.

for them it is not only party above country, but their part of the party over the rest of their party.
