It was always going to be political. If the vote was by secret ballot, Trump might have been convicted, but with the votes being public, few Republican Senators would want to be seen as voting against a Republican.

Well, since the precedent has been set that a former president can be impeached let’s bring Obama to trial next!

For what, exactly? I don't recall Obama trying to overturn a fair and legal election, up to and including inciting an armed lynch mob storming the capitol.
