AG, you are absolutely correct in stating that the U.S. was never meant to be a direct democracy like ancient Athens, but rather a representative democracy/republic like Rome. However, I think that just like the ancient Romans, Americans are starting to become rather passive about their government. The result has been that we mostly have rich Americans representing the whole country just like wealthy landowners did in Rome. Such a disparity begs the question, "How can the rich know what someone who makes minimum wage is going through?" The answer, in my mind at least, is that one can only truly understand someone else if they have been through the similar experiences.

Also, your idea of a more informed populace mimics the words of my favorite president, Thomas Jefferson, who said that "Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories. And to render even them safe, their minds must be improved to a certain degree."

Yes, i too agree that we live in a posh republic, but i see that changing within the next couple of years. I really think the nation will see what is ahead when gas hits five dollars a gallon next year, and the seperation if the rich from the poor. It will be some sort of socialistic, bi-partisan-facist inter-weave.

Yeah, I would say that if the nation faces some form of economic collapse then we will become national socialists of some variety because of how we see the government and nation. I definitely hope we don't collapse though because I don't want a larger government.

Yesterday Citibank 'borrowed' 7 billion from the arabs, and the Dow went up 263 points. I think we are already on our way to a one world state.

What does a country do when all it's resources are on the outside?

I'm coming to the realization that the fleece is plummeting over people's eyes. Just because a member of congress is a minister, and is running for office to be president, that doesn't put him on top of the other candidants. How can people let that one thing majorize their vote, that abortion is evil, that homosexuality is a sin, and how Islamafacists are trying to destroy capitalism, because they are heathens. WTF? What happened to the diplomatic approach? Why can't we send our best scholars to enrich rather than eradicate? Why does someone always have to lose?

Currently the Vatican is almost a nation in itself, it is the legal body of Italy, every church, mosque, and synagogue the world over answers to the Vatican Church.

Synagogues and mosques are not Christian. Many churches are not Catholic. And what makes you think every Catholic priest really cares what some old guy hundreds of miles away says?

Because they have a monopoly on religion. All religions came from the same starting point.

The diplomatic/scholarly approach would take time, patience, determination, and most of all pure brain power! Americans are like pigs eating at one long trough: we want things fast, easy, and OUR way. Americans are growing fat, lazy, and ignorant. If only the majority would realize that the easy way is the not the best way, maybe the U.S. could get itself out of its current self-destructive phase.

When civilization gets burnt, you will have no need for money and looting.
Though i would love to go to a south american country (especially columbia) and
get stoned with you...

Yes, it sounds like pretty much the best idea I've ever heard.
