Sounds like some very crafty editing to me.

Either way, people with this attitude need to get over themselves.

Not everyone is Christian and nor is their religion controlled by the government.

They might be correct on that biblical quote but even so that does not remove the coercion factor, like in that senerio like mary was chosen to have baby god and well still didn't really get a choice.

That's what I mean. It's crafty editing by whoever wrote the Bible story.

It's no coincidence that these are the same words men put in women's mouths today, including hmmm..... Kavanaugh and Trump ... when accused with rape: "But your honour, she said she wanted it!"

What is said in a work compiled 2-3 millennia ago just might be irrelevant to the 21st century.

There’s lots of fine wisdom in the Bible….but there’s also lots that is anachronistic.

Abortion is a very sticky issue. But I believe in “choice.” I don’t believe in third-trimester abortion.

This, thank you for saying it. That is really the ulitmate truth, like is something written at least 300 years ago really relevant to things going on these days.

That said I also disagree a bit with what you say of abortion. I understand wanting a solid legal limit on abortion beecause of course it would be wrong to abort a baby as it is being born in most cases. I mean I dont entirely disagree with some limit but the problem is for women wanting a baby, sometimes they get complications later on which makes it safer to abort than carry through the pregnancy. So by passing laws that limit all abortion that makes it also harder to perform necessary ones in those cases where a woman who wants children has complications in her pergnancy and cannot continue carry it safely. So yeah idk even biden passed a thing to keep pill abortions available even in states that want to outlaw abortion. I mean I hate that I have to include 'women who want children' but it is the only thing that might get thrrough to the conservatives more than I am a woman with a boyfriend and neither of us want kids, i mean sheesh the way some people react we might as well be considered witches to be burnt at the stake.

I just figure the biden mandate that is trying to ensure at least access to pill abortions is helpful. but so yeah those of us who do not want children still have some protection. But yeah I do not want kids but for real I am largely bothered by restricted access to abortion harming women who do want to have children. Like why should they be punished for gettng pregnant and something going wrong that makes having an abortion the more viable option like the current policies. Like some of the women who end up in these situations already have kids and cannot resonably afford to have another one. LIke they need to take care of the children they already have not just bring a new life into their already money tight houshold everytime they have sex.

Absolutely.

Oh darn. No witnesses!

And, a really great metaphor of her lost innocence.

This thing???

Women's healthcare should be controlled by this thing that a woman reportedly mentioned to an angel, thousands of years ago?

Where's my "This Thing Doesn't Want That Thing!!" hat?

Could someone please tell me what was said to Mary, as the "thing" that would happen?

How exactly was this described?

"Hey, we won't hurt you. Everything's gonna be OK. We chose you because you're special ... "

Did they offer to show her some puppies, or was there candy involved?

This is messed up, and I consider myself Christian.

Luke1:29-35

Quote:
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[b] the Son of God.

The “angel” left out some key points - like the fact that her son would be tortured to death.

The situation reads manipulative to me.

The power of the Most High will overshadow her. Hmmm… It’s creepy…

It reminds me of Rosemary's Baby.

It’s troubling although there are passages in Deuteronomy which are more blatantly problematic as far as nonconsensual sex is concerned.

The Bible is probably not a great source to turn to when it comes to issues related to sex and bodily autonomy.

Maybe we should follow Wuthering Heights for sex advice instead. It has some pretty explicit rape scenes but at least the son doesn't get tortured. Oh wait, actually he does ... and so does the wife, and the niece, and the brother, and the sister. It's got equal opportunity tortutre, and it's a lot shorter to read.

That would be an improvement… It’s also a much more enjoyable read.

With the Bible, you can’t usually critique it without people being offended. I’m expecting them to arrive at any moment.

With works that aren’t considered the perfect word of God by anyone, it’s much easier to talk openly about core issues, such as those involving consent.

(hesitates)

"Describe for us your THING!"

I'm honestly not trying to insult the Bible. I go to church but I've never read the book. I listen to sermons but they're usually very positive, like "Let's show love to our neighbours by creating a food drive, or serving food in low income areas", and "Don't be a bigot or cast judgment on others". The words of the Bible are always interpreted using today's social norms. Nothing is meant to be literal except the bigger themes of "Be a good person" and "Be tolerant".

I’ve read it all the way through a couple of times and am not a big fan. I, personally, found works of literature much more instructive, as far as morality is concerned, and inspiring. That’s not to say that it doesn’t have gems here and there.

We’re all different, though.
