@ MBP

I figured as much; I saw the long barrel on the Uzi and that sort of tipped me off that I was looking at semi-auto clones and not actual class 3 stuff. IMHO full auto is overrated, I shot quite a bit of it when I was living in Denver and came away with a definite meh sort of impression. If I'm going through the hassle of form wrangling with the ATF its going to be for suppressors, way cooler than full auto and much more practical as far as ammo usage and "gee whiz" factor when you get to shoot without ear muffs. In my case I have machine tools including a pair of metal lathes, so I could pay the tax stamps and make them myself without too much trouble. It helps that many retailer have pictures of their suppressors disassembled on their web pages, the principle is simple and the parts aren't exactly rocket science to turn once you have the basic idea.

I'm thinking the smaller of the two Glocks. The Glock 27, which is .40 caliber; and the ammo would be hollow point. Hollow point for the mere fact that it won't go through the assailant and hit an innocent.......

I commend your considerable considerations there!

I am right-handed and was once quite surprised when I actually out-shot a friend of mine while using his own 357 on his target behind the barn, but my best shooting is more typical of yours with a rifle and left-handed. Many years ago, however, I had a 12-gage shotgun only I could use effectively unless I had first let you know about the bent of the barrel!

Rifles and AKs seem a little impractical. Sure they look cool, but the bullets are probably more expensive than the smaller weapons and the arms seem heavy.

I would go with AKs in case there was a realistic risk of a Zombie apocalypse, but otherwise...

You do realize there are two versions of the AK-47.

I don't think I care.

You should because one is simply a hunting rifle.

Well first a little about me:

1) I'm deadly accurate with my rifles, but I can't hit the broad side of a barn with my handguns. I really really really need more practice with my handguns, but I only go to the range once or twice a month because that's all I care to do.

2) In my state, you need to take a range test to get a conceal & carry permit. Since my handgun skills are so poor, I don't even bother taking the test as I would surely fail it.

3) In my state, you do not need a permit to open carry. However, since my handgun skills are so poor, I would be a first rate j*ck*ss if I did open carry; so I do not open carry.

So with all that in mind, I'd go with either the .50AE gold-plated Desert Eagle or the Smith & Wesson .500 Magnum....................................................................................................................................................Just Kidding!! !

If it was legal to open carry a rifle for self-defense, I'd prefer one of my AKs, because the assailant wouldn't stand a chance (of course that would also mean the rifle ammo would go through them and could possibly hit an innocent). Since it is not, we'll have to go with one of the handguns. And this is, of course, assuming that I'm open-carrying against my better judgment considering I'm not a good shot with handguns. I would need to go with one that I can better easily control. I'm thinking the smaller of the two Glocks. The Glock 27, which is .40 caliber; and the ammo would be hollow point. Hollow point for the mere fact that it won't go through the assailant and hit an innocent.......assuming I was lucky enough to actually hit them.
I'd prefer an AR-15. Lower recoil, stock in line with the barrel, lighter, and the .223 causes some nasty wounds since it fragments at high velocities. And yeah you definitely don't wanna settle for less than hollow points. Glocks are legendary pistols, but I don't like the grip angle at all. I'd go for the Beretta Px4 in .40.

EDIT: Scratch that, I'd take a Smith and Wesson M&P 40.

@ Inuyasha: Are you referring to the Saiga? Or the MAK-90?

AKs are actually one of the cheapest guns to shoot cause of the massive quantities of Soviet surplus ammo still floating around. Other rifles chambered in military calibers can be shot cheaply, even 7.92mm Mauser, 7.62x54R and .303 British can still be had for a song if you look around a bit. I can shoot my WASR-2 AK74 clone for less than many of my pistols, though it is fairly heavy for the caliber. Modern plastic furnished rifles aren't necessarily so, an M4 weighs in at around 6 lbs if memory serves, which is only about one lb heavier than a Desert Eagle pistol.

There are a lot more than that, the Russians alone made the AK47, the AKS47, the AKM, the AK74, the AKS47, the AKSU74, the AK101, the AK107, and several other variants that elude me off the top of my head. Virtually every country in the former eastern bloc made their own versions, as did several Arab and Asian countries as well. Then there are the comercial versions, the semi-auto and export models chambered in Western cartridges, and even new US made ones built to comply with the law regarding sporting purpose firearms and imports. It probably gets into the hundreds of different types.

Yeah there's plenty of 7.62x39's to go around. Bigger bullets are usually more expensive, but that's to be taken as a rule of thumb. .30-06's are actually cheaper than .308's. For a SHTF situation I'd definitely have an FN FAL with an 18 inch barrel. It gets the job done when it comes to zombies and can take down any game in North America.

That's true. You know how many times I've gotten annoyed by faux-gun nuts trying to correct me when I say 'AK-74' "Oh you mean AK-47." "No, I mean AK-74." :? gun noobs. Though I'm more into the history of weaponry as part of my interest in military history so I don't think I'm much better then a gun noob compared to you or Mr MBP

lol damn you Call of Duty. I remember some guy told me AK-47's are the one of most powerful rifles in the world. I was like "Sure, if you also think Chevy Cobalts are one of the fastest cars in the world".

LOL it probably is Call of Duty's fault. I love that game series (for the most part) but there are way too many dumb kids (and adults...) who think memorizing the guns suddenly makes them experts.

Hahaha I know eh? I'm no expert on guns either since I don't declare myself an expert from having shot em a couple of times and knowing enough to not buy popular misconceptions.

Absolutely, and I already have my own reserved spot for standing behind somebody who will be saying, "Pass the ammo!"
