But a "country bumpkin" is usually not a "redneck." Think of the character "Eb" on "Green Acres."

A "peckerwood" might or might not be a "redneck."

A redneck. And probably an inbred one too.

I'm betting Australia is chock full of what we Yanks would call rednecks.

Stereotype much?

Shoes? We don't have shoes,go barefoot all season.
The inbred remark is an old one, tasteless and also inaccurate.Nobody is as inbred as European Royalty.
Always amusing when one exposes their cultural prejudice.I have found those sort of people to be more ignorant in general than "inbred rednecks."

Hayseed, clodhopper.

In France: "Provincial".

In the UK they have "chavs". Underclass youth who have lotsa kids out of wedlock. Or that's my understanding of what it means. But a chav is usually an urban dweller, as I understand it. Not really equivalent to hick, or hillybilly. Maybe sorta equivalent to "trailer trash".

I tend to use the word "provincial" for the way my fellow Spokanites beat themselves up for their self perception in regard to Seattle. We tend to call it "Space Needle envy."

A hayseed is merely a person who lives in the country and embraces rural values.

We have “provincial” people even in Queens. They tend to be suspicious of “big city” values. They can be either urban or rural.

If I'm not mistaken chavs are basically 'trailer trash' meets 'wigger'?

Maybe. Maybe not. You Brits can weigh in.

I think that "chavs" (like I said)are mostly urban, and second, can be any skin color. Racially integrated hoodlums. In fact there used to be a British WrongPlanet member who called himself "aspie chav" who had a selfie as his avatar, and he was Black (probably of West Indian extraction). So they aren't really "White" trash, and because apparently some are real Blacks ( or East Indians/Pakis) the American slang for young Whites who affect Black culture and dress might not apply to chavs.

Just in general, both terms are someone problematic, but still generally convey what I was getting at. To some extent the term 'wigger' is problematic since being white doesn't inherently mean that one isn't genuinely involved in the subculture that 'wigger' implies emulation of, and vice-versa, being black doesn't mean that one is genuinely involved. Further it ignores anyone who isn't white or black. </nonsense>

Isn't a "chav" a British person who's into hip hop fashions and just likes to act sleazy in general?

It's not people from the country you have to worry about in Australia, it's the people from the suburbs. To live in the country you need some reason to be there, you have to have some specialised skill such as farming, mining or truck driving.

You don't even need a job to live in the suburbs and idle hands are the devil's playthings. We can them bogans. The meaning is similar to redneck except they live in the suburbs. I think the real reason these people turn to crime is not because they're poor but because they're bored.

I'll never get robbed or beaten by a farmer because a farmer is too busy for petty crime. Farmers don't have the time for that stuff and neither do miners. But an unemployed suburbanite has all the time in the world and also a desire to prove his own importance.

What you describe (bogans) does not sound like rednecks to me. It sounds simply like the urban underclass you can find in any modern nation.

Rednecks are unsophisticated, usually undereducated people who live usually in rural or non urban areas. Not always criminal or bad. But people of the land, who live by hunting and fishing for example. Usually very religious. And not very progressive in their views (racist, sexist, homophobic, etc).

Now the wild areas of Australia are I'm guessing *VERY* wild. And I thought this would be a prime breeding ground for what we Yanks would call rednecks. In my mind, I guess I was thinking of Crockadile Dundee as an "Australian redneck".

I've heard of Rose Tyler from Doctor Who being described as a chav, so it most certainly does not mean redneck in the Yank/Cannuck sense. Given that character, trailer trash meets wigger seems a pretty good fit actually.
