What would be a good holiday for atheists?

Eat food, decorate house in pretty colours, give pressies for the fun of it holiday! In other words all the existing holidays like Christmas and Easter, and I don't have to stick with the Christian stuff either, Divali looks fun I might try that some time.

Sounds good, but I think it involves too much. People aren't going to want to do that much to observe nothing.
Is that Nadsat talk?

Nadsat, what's that? If you don't know what pressies are I meant presents/gifts.
I find holidays and festivals to be fun, I don't really care if I don't share the beliefs they were based on or am not expecting miracles to happen (santa claus, whatever phenomenon Hindus look for when celebrating Diwali.)

It's the speak used in 'A Clockwork Orange'
I was just poking a little funny at your Britishness
It should be something like that, but I don't think it's going to materialize because atheists aren't going to be able to organize themselves well enough to make a difference.
A good analogy are the Wall Street Occupiers. They have good intentions but they will ultimately not do a thing.

Ok first I want to say that without 'Believers' there would be no atheists.
So atheists should have a 'Thank you God worshipers' day for giving us someone to be different from.
The 29th of Febuary would be ideal for this as no one else is using it and it only exists because some people decided that the natural uncomplicated and elegant passing of days, months and seasons had to be given made up names and that everyone had to change the way they behave to fit in with that fiction. Then later when the numbers didn't add up they conveniently invented an extra unplanned day that sacrifices it's place in the other three years to save the whole calender.
Appropriate ?
And just to really rub it in atheists should publicise the 29/2 holiday get it internationally recognised and then not observe it.
I mean, look at how that DC gathering went.
If the Reason Rally in DC consisted of sitting around and doing nothing, then that is what we are doing here and now. Besides exchanging ideas (like we are doing here) it accomplished increased cohesion among the non-believers, and showed the world that atheists are a significant and growing voting block.
EDIT:
As a matter of fact, I am not a Ron Paul supporter. I am proud to say that I am not a Newt supporter either. Atheists come in all political types, however. Politically, the only thing we have in common is a lack of support for religion based policies, like the Defense of Marriage Act.

Great idea! Typically, this would be done posthumously, but I would vote for it. Here is a great show where he showed his brilliance, and his wit. Carl Sagan was mentioned earlier in this thread, so that's another reason to watch.

Atheists should compromise and should celebrate their common heritage with modern non atheists by honoring some of the ancient pioneers of monotheism- on the theory that atleast monotheism was a step in the right direction ( you know - paring down the number of dieties from dozens and hundreds down to one).
Figures like Iknaton, Abraham, and Zoroaster, paved the way for both modern monotheists ( who disbelieve in Zeuse, Ishtar, Baal, Woden, and hundreds of other dieties) and modern athiests who believe in one fewer God than monotheists do.
I don't mind religious holidays, and I find it perfectly find to give people time off work and school to perform their rituals.
I also think it's only fair that the rest of us get the same amount of days off.
I just don't think it is OK to force everybody to take the same days off.
Sundays I approve of, btw. I like that we have one day a week where almost everybody shares the time off, and I don't mind that the choice of Sunday has christian roots.
Here in Norway we have a lot of days off every year for religious and other reasons.
That's fine, of course. Everybody likes time off. What annoys me is that we call them by their christian names. I hate having to explain to my kids that everything is closed today because a minority believes something that is severely insignificant to anyone else happened on this day long ago. That's so silly. Give us all a bunch of days to take off every year, and let us pick when and for what reason. Then the christians can take time off at easter, muslims can focus on other stuff at other times, and I can take my nameless days off whenever I want.
I don't need any special days to somehow celebrate a lack of religious faith, but I want my days off!

I ( an american) used to have an internet penpal in the Netherlands and we once compared our two country's holiday calenders.
Going by your country and Holland apparently most holidays in most european countries are relgious. In the USA most holidays are for honoring secular political figures like George Washington, and Martin Luther King Jr., etc.- or for secular historic events like Independence day and Columbus Day, and veterans day. These events and people tend to be regarded as still relevent by most people.
Ironically Americans tend to be more religous than modern west europeans even though we only have two officially recognized religous holidays: christmas and easter.
So there isnt quite the "cognitive dissonance" between us and our holidays that you might have.
Atheists sit around and do nothing, just like Ron Paul supporters!
phew...
Not true. Our leading physicists and many other scientists are atheists or agnostic. They are busy making our technological civilization flourish.

It's true in that atheists will never have their holiday. They are like the Occupy crowd that can't get their message agreed on.

wht you havent considered is that most of us probably share unspecifieds sentiment that there isnt anything to gather around,
it is a lack of, something we dont want to spend time on so why dedicate a day to it?

Further illustrates my point.
As it stands, I don't think atheists could hope to act cohesive enough to form a day for themselves.
And they wonder why they can't hold government positions more often.
