There have been politicians that have said and done similar things to Pope Francis, it is not that new. The differnce is the Papacy isn't necessarily expected to directly change people's lives en masse, but rather to inspire them to change their own behaviour.
As a humanist from a catholic family, I'm cautious of the fanfare that surrounds him. Sure he is nice chap as an individual, however the theological detail does matter, even if the broad brush moral message may be a bit more positive.
