That'll protect them from the hogs alright.

I had a friend who used to trap a sow every year and raise the piglets for meat.

Her three little girls played in her unfenced backyard all the time. She complained about the beating her garden took though.

Rural American here - put up a big ass fence. Long term it will be cheaper than ammo. And safer. I can’t imagine what it would be like to only get to go outside if an adult is guarding you with an assault rifle. (Obviously that is what you are doing, because in three minutes they can’t get your attention and have you turn up with the gun - and if they can, they can also get in the house.)

Also, eat more wild pork! Shoot, butcher, cure/freeze/eat repeat.

I am always scared I am going to get killed or maimed by hogs when I am out hunting deer.

/\
Bears are more of a concern here.
Hogs usually leave people alone unless you are talking about a sow with a litter.
You can climb a tree to escape a hog but not a bear.
If you get injured in the woods hogs might try to eat you.

When I was a kid once, I hurdled a fence (easily the best hurdle of my life) about a foot in front of an enraged sow that was coming after me. If that fence had been another foot or two away, I doubt that I would have made it. With nobody around to rescue me, I almost certainly would have died before anyone found me.

Hence the expression, “Madder than a biting sow.”

Interesting that wild pigs are an actual thing of concern somewhere on the continent. We don't have them here anywhere. Bears, coyotes, mountain lions, cougars etc ya sure they can all pose problems for h00mans, but pigs? Only in pens on farms or in the butcher section of a supermarket.

I don't think I've ever heard that expression before.. but we don't have wild piggies around here, and I haven't spent any time on a pig farm.

We DID have a place called "Piggies Palace," about a half hour or so drive away from where I live.. but if you look that up you'll get the heebie jeebies.

Interesting.

With all the guns, why not just shoot 'em & eat 'em? :?

There's no suitable trees for that where I hunt.

Wild boards have a well-earned reputation for aggression, feral pigs share it. Even domestic pigs have killed people before.

Pigs have the size, strength and temperament to pose serious problems for humans.

After reading the story of a 6 year old who shot a teacher, I agree.

Boars taste musky.Old ones are tough.
An old tough boar wouldn’t be quality meat.Plus getting it out of the woods.
All have parasites, possibly hog lice and most likely E. coli.
That’s why most people usually pen them awhile after catching them.Younger ones. Then fatten and worm them.So you need to buy feed and medicine for them.
Plus a strong fence, they will root out.
The poop really stinks, they need shade ( they sunburn)and water to keep cool.
Then you have to butcher yourself or load the hog and take to process .

I watched a video a while ago where a boar was charging a man and he had to shoot it with a pistol. Worked a treat but it carried on coming for a good few shots even after it's leg had a big chunk of bone blown out of it.

Hog hunting with spears (and custom made hog spears) was actually a thing in the medieval times because it was considered so dangerous even with the far better choice of weapons back then.

All mammals have E. coli, it's part of normal gut fauna.

Boars don't live in their own s**t like factory farm pigs, so it's unlikely they're a greater risk for E. coli than the pigs we usually eat.

Ontario is also preparing for the boarpocalypse.

They can't be taking it too seriously though, they're not even passing out assault rifles like candy.
