Thanks for the lead... an interesting read.

However, I can't see Nagel "attacking materialism"; he assumes Materialism but seems to say that the evidence for it is inadequate. (In my opinion "inadequate" is a euphemism for none at all).

Anyhow, thanks, but a nonsense does not become sense by being mixed in a tangle of spaghetti.

65 pages in about six weeks??? I can't see the count or the start date at the moment.

AspieOtaku, you have the BEST troll I have seen in a LONG time!

With just a simple question. You the man!

Congrats! Outstanding!

Now, concerning the proof. I ... I... I know better than to get into a discussion about religion. Even NTs have their saying, "Anything but politics or religion", referring to if you are at a social gathering, watch out for those two topics, it can start an argument when an argument is not what you are looking for at the moment.

Edit was I thought it was three days, this topic started Jan 27, 2015.

AS IS THE rule of Socrates, Open ended simple questions make a best way for COMPLEX philosophical discussions.

'AspieOtaku', and the female 'ANA' with all the o and O's, added to her user name, are truly invaluable Prospects in this Socratic method of discourse on this site.

And there was another 'Socrates', WHO used to frequent here more often, by the user name of 'Babybird'.

I can spot 'em almost immediately, as 'Socrates' IS HARD TO MISS, in all the human and or fictional or and non-fictional forms 'THAT' COMES in..:)

So-called 'Trolling', is all about human emotionalism, at the core of every semi-rational discussion that yields a diversity of new potential enlightening AND AWAKENING TRUEr knowledge..:)

It ruffles the feathers of literally thinking folks, no matter where one seeks new knowledge, AS WISDOM but that is the price of change; no pain, no gain.

THE GreaTEST LAW OF Mother Nature TRUE aka GOD, IS NO PAIN, NO GAIN, as applied to human advancement in greater TRUER HUMAN POTENTIAL, AT CORE Of what that even means to be HUMAN, IN ALL FRIGGING WAYS.

And 'THAT' SURE isn't limited to 'little thoughts in little heads'.

It's what grows from 'the seed' that makes THE POTENTIAL FOR a fullER realized living THINGY..:)

That is where the repeatability comes in. No theory ever rests on the strength of a single scientist (or group of scientists) and a single experiment. Not only must a hypothesis stand up to testing. It must stand up to multiple testing by multiple groups over multiple years. Nothing ever rests on one experiment.
Bulldust! Scientific Method is not a model of anything. It is a method of investigation and nothing more. "Individual scientists" are every bit as susceptible to the lure of fame and fortune as is the meanest celebrity or prostitute in any other arty sphere.

I have been tired of this for long time.

This is not a place to come for some interesting conversation with odd bods with interesting perspectives on the transient or sages with wisdom of experience and learning.

It is merely a reproduction of media hype egomania. The narcissists have taken over the asylum.

I agree with that one specific post (except for 'Bulldust') below which I wrote "Are you aware you are agreeing with me". I will break it down to show the specific points of our mutual agreement in that post.

This is a point that the science-literate posters have been trying to get across for giant chunks of this thread. And I thought you weren't listening but I guess you were.

I did not stray from that point when I wrote
Janissy wrote:

The accurate-as-possible model of nature is the end that the scientific method is trying to achieve. It looks like you thought I was saying that the scientific method is the model of nature but I was saying the scientific method is a way to get the model of nature.

And then I said
Quote:
but that in actuality, sometimes individual scientists will get so enmeshed with their hypothesis that they can't bear to discard it and will stick with what you call "pre determined result".

and you said
Quote:
"Individual scientists" are every bit as susceptible to the lure of fame and fortune as is the meanest celebrity or prostitute in any other arty sphere.

The only difference between those two sentences is that I give enmeshment as a motivator and you give fame and fortune as a motivator. But of course those aren't mutually exclusive motivators.

65 pages is nothing. I've been on forums where topics like these run into hundreds of pages.

Why you must never trust a scientist:

Quote:
The Piltdown Man was a paleoanthropological hoax in which bone fragments were presented as the fossilised remains of a previously unknown early human. These fragments consisted of parts of a skull and jawbone, said to have been collected in 1912 from a gravel pit at Piltdown, East Sussex, England. The Latin name Eoanthropus dawsoni ("Dawson's dawn-man", after the collector Charles Dawson) was given to the specimen. The significance of the specimen remained the subject of controversy until it was exposed in 1953 as a forgery, consisting of the lower jawbone of an orangutan deliberately combined with the cranium of a fully developed modern human.

The Piltdown hoax is perhaps the most famous paleoanthropological hoax ever to have been perpetrated. It is prominent for two reasons: the attention paid to the issue of human evolution, and the length of time (more than 40 years) that elapsed from its discovery to its full exposure as a forgery.

And yet you just did trust scientists: the ones who exposed it as a forgery. It was through the scientific method  that it was eventually exposed as a forgery.

The same method can give you different answers. Never trust a scientist and never trust the scientific method. Be sceptical and ask questions.
