Just for fun, which religion do you belong to? If you select other, please specify. Jedi doesn't count.

You know, agnostic and atheist aren't the same thing.

Take me, for instance. When I was a child I thought I was agnostic. Although I was driven by a deep-rooted belief in god, I wasn't sure about how the differences between religions mapped into reality.

After a lifetime of meditation, study and practice one day the light dawned and now I'm an atheist.

You are correct, I was assuming that some would not be able differentiate the two. Atheists say "There is definitely no god." Agnostics will say "There may or may not be a god, but this is ultimately unknowable."

Meh, i couldn't possibly vote if atheism and agnostism are considered the same. I consider atheism to be a religion in itself, i refuse to vote for a religion.

This is false. You're confusing Atheism with "Strong Atheism." If you cannot say "I have a belief in a god or gods" you are an atheist. Calling atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color or off a TV channel. The word shouldn't even need to exist - we don't refer to ourselves as "non-astrologers" or have words for people who don't believe that UFOs routinely abduct people.

The Jedi order isn't a religion <.< or if it is, it has no clear God, it's closer to buddhism in that sense.

Why are Atheist and Agnostic classed as "Religion" in this poll?

Atheism is similar to a religion, it requires faith.

Isn't it more like the lack thereof?

I used to be Christian, but now I more leaning towards Agnostic...

By no means Atheist!

In fact, I'm somethat irked by the fact that Atheist and Agnostic are placed in one voting catergory. They're two completely different things!

No, the way most gods and deities are described it would be 100% impossible to disprove them. So claiming they do not exist requires faith.

It's not true that agnosticism is a "middle ground" before theism and atheism. Here's a link with a good explanation:

http://www.rationalresponders.com/am_i_ ... or_atheist

Note I have no respect whatsoever for the people running that site, but in this case they got things right.

A theology is a teaching about god or gods. Each theology carries with it an definition of divinity or godhood, and often identifies the personality of gods. A theology is a affirmative statement of conviction based on facts and evidence which are considered true by those who hold this conviction.

There are many different theologies, from the most simple with states that there are no gods (given an implied definition of the word) to the very complex with millions of gods and everything in between.

When a group of people are convinced of (nearly the same) convictions (among which a particular theology) come together to create an association around these convictions than the resulting organization is often call a religion. We tend to call these convictions believes.

We can say that atheism is a theology, not a religion. Only when atheists where to create an association of atheists could we speak about this organization as a religion (but never about atheism alone).

So atheism would be theology in the sense of 'I've studied it, and it's bullsh1t".

BTW: I refuse to vote in the poll, for obvious reasons.
