I think holocaust was one of the most well known genocides in history simply for the fact that it took place in a western country and at time when there were cameras. Most of this stuff is still going on today but not so much in the west these days.
Well, it ws either a well kept secret or there was a blind eye turned (certainly by many german residents) since none of the allies realised what was happening until at least 1942. Noone could believe it, despite intelligence saying otherwise.
The Holocause was something else, it was a mechanised, systematic, organised genocide on a scale that most just can't wrap their heads around. Nothing before or since has come close. Just think 1.1 million killed in Sobibor alone!
