Hi - I'm Louis
I'm rather surprized to even SEE the word "belief" used so freely here -
especially in the contxt of RELIGIOUS belief, which I have NEVER
understood.
The only kind of belief I understand is the kind that DEPENDS on proof
in the form of confirming evidence ( I think that's called "empirical" belief )
But to accept an idea and treat it AS IF it were reality - yet at the same
time acknowledge that it CANNOT be proven - makes no sense to me.
( I'm not referring to such things as hypocracy, wishful thinking or
superstition - their origins are clear enough )
Does this kind of thinking make me an "aspie"????

see my thread 'what do you believe that you cannot prove,' you would agree with at least one person there, 'not much.'

There are plenty of believers and plenty of non believers on this site, I tend to side with the non believers, but......I would have said that everyone believes in things other than those than they can absolutely establish as fact.

There is a whole philosophical discussion to be had about what can be established as fact, and maybe we should have it. This is as good a place to start as any.

Welcome by the way, I will put some 'hello' stuff on your original post.

At the bottom of all beliefs that have reasons and "proof" there are things that people accept - assumptions that are unprovable. It is just that some people are more comfortable believing in things with less proof and basis in logic than others.

It probably either makes you an agnostic or atheist.

From Louis -
Neither- I regard "agnostic" as the opposite of "gnostic" and
"atheist" as the opposite of "theist" - all forms of belief for or against
something. I am totaly neutral - impartial and indifferent to whether
anyone's beliefs are true or untrue. Other people are free to believe
whatever they wish so long as they don't bother ME aboout it.

I regard myself as agnostic because I am currently undecided.
Is there something about agonstic that I dont know?
(Dont accept everything as true, yet can see supernatural elements to our universe)
