a) Believe in? It isn't like some fake boogie man god figure where nothing is really there but everyone has "faith" in it anyways. Evolution is a natural process of selection that occurs throughout all of the history of life. It just happens, regardless of if you believe in it or not.
b) Evolution isn't out to explain things like "why cats purr" so much as tracing a historic, genetic lineage of all living creatures. "Why" is barely a scientific question and is more subject to conjecture and speculation than much of any real scientific fact shy of finding the mechanism...which is, itself, not always the most pleasing of answers because evolution doesn't work in such a decided fashion so much as very haphazardly assembled (don't believe me? look up about that blind spot that everyone has in their vision).
