I know there are other threads on this but this is just to mark the tragedy that is Britain's exit from the EU on the night when it is actually happening.
What an awful day for Britain, for Europe and for the world, we can only hope that sooner or later something good will come of it but the journey to that will be long and painful I fear.
It's so depressing I can't even express it. The UK media is reporting from 'Brexit parties' that are happening around the country, these are the people who have set the agenda for our country, I feel physically sick at the sight of it to be honest.
My regional news programme last night featured questions sent in from viewers:
First one, seriously, 'What does Brexit mean?' Not in some political, philosophical, socio-economic sense, literally what does the word mean? And they answered it by explaining that it was a combination of 'Britain' and 'Exit'.
Second question: when will I be able to get a blue passport?
Third question: can we go back to pounds, shillings and pence?
On a night when barriers are being built and division enshrined in the heart of our nation let's kindle some hope for a world where community and openness are valued above hatred and ignorance and where maybe one day Britain will truly become great, not again, but really for the first time in its history because it has never really been 'great' in any true sense of the word. Greatness doesn't consist in power and exploitation and domination but in compassion and community, in openness and aspiration to build a better world, a world based on trust and love and friendship.
Here's to the Britain I could truly call home because what I'm seeing tonight is not it.
