Hey guys I was just wondering what any Christians on here thought of gambling (as in the form of betting on outcomes of an event). Its something which I've been discussing with friends of mine, and been looking at opinions on the internet and they seem to have different ideas of whether or not it is.

So anyways, was just wondering if you thought:

a) All gambling is a sin

b) Gambling is always okay in moderation (ie you dont get addicted to it)

c) Gambling is only okay in moderation if the gamble is not completely random (e.g rolling a dice) but you can research data going with it (e.g sports betting)

d) No, gambling is not a sin

e) Other

If you could give me a reason as to why you think one of the options then i'd be very much greatful

Cheers
Gassy

I would say that it depends on the reason for it. As a form of entertainment, gambling can be fun; a bet on a football game or a horse race makes in a lot more interesting, poker of blackjack would be really boring games if there is nothing at stake.

On the other hand, if it is done in the hope of making money, I would say that it is sinful for nothing would be done to earn it.

Which, of course, wipes out most of the financial sector totally as a proper Christian operation.

Of course it is a sin, unless it is something like the Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, where it costs nothing to enter.

The bible says nothing about gambling being a sin.

Yeah, I've heard that argument before. Hardcore Baptists often "extrapolate" scripture to support their view of what sin is. After all, they believe any drinking of alcohol is a sin, but in the New Testament, they used actual wine (not grape juice, but wine with alcohol, as one doesn't get drunk on just grape juice) during communion.

How do we define "sin?"

Is gambling harmful?

I know someone whose purse was stolen while they were playing slots.
I think the thief had a better use for the money than she did.
Its almost like taking stuff (like money) out of the rubbish, which isn't illegal.

Knowing the odds are against you, and the house always wins, why bother?

Do you like working many hours and throwing away your paycheck?

Do the math.
You probably can throw the money at charity and get a tax deduction.

People play at all sorts of things and enjoy it. If people spend money for enjoyment in gambling it's no less legitimate than giving money to their church because it gives them a good feeling.
