Some people dislike hunters and have even criticized them for killing the stronger and letting the weaker live, but is that really a "bad" thing? In the movies Predator 1&2, and AVP 1&2, the alien known as "Predator" somewhat made an extreme version of this concept of a hunter. Predator would brutally kill anything which challenged it, but didn't attack the helpless, leaving unarmed women and children alone and such like that.

So, is it so horrible for people to hunt "for sport" as some call it, and kill only the creatures which can defend themselves and potentially also kill the hunter, or is it better to systematically butcher creatures in a slaughterhouse where it is relatively safe for the people performing the killing? Or is killing completely evil?

When a tiger or an elephant shows up with a high powered rifle I might find you have a point.

How about they just show up with overpowering physical force, momentum to knock down and trample, and the ability to apply high pressure to crush and tear with tusks and teeth?

Hardly remember the predator movies, there was a woman surviving one in the first movie, but don't remember why, the reason they would not kill children and women, if that is the case, would be because of the audience acceptance or reaction towards scenes like that, I don't see any other reason than the controversy of scenes of bloody deaths of children, even if only implied I presume, among the audience and in the media at the time. I believe it would more believable predators killing anything standing in their way, and that probably would have been the story if the movies would have been made today, I could be wrong though.

Hunting? well, in ancient times killing human beings was entertainment, nowadays it is animals, without much moral or legal consequences as with humans

About not killing the defenseless, not sure, I would speculate on #1 the challenge I suppose? no point into killing animals who are not aggresive and cannot defend themselves, #2 morals, feeling less guilty for killing an animal who is a predator itself, and more when they are predator to humans.

well, the issue in disliking hunters, especially from animals-rights activists, would be about why they do it, the question of why hunters hunt animals if that is not something trivial for their survival, unlike animals who are predators to survive. That could be a reason.

I find trophy hunting (or fishing) to be very wasteful and really disgusting.

Hunting and fishing for food is okay, and in my mind is far better than factory farming of animals. Unfortunately, factory farming of both animals and plants is the only way to even come close to feeding our (overpopulated) world. If everyone were to hunt, all life on the planet would be extinguished in no time.

Well I quite like the first Predator movie and the 2nd one was that bad either. Dunno about after that lol.

Hunting serves other purposes beyond just the sporting element. I haven't been hunting in a long time but it's a big part of the culture of my state and a big part of the state economy. For the most part, people tend to eat whatever they shoot besides like small game like rabbits or squirrels or whatever. Overpopulation big problem to especially with deer. Lots of people have their cars damaged or destroyed and sometimes get killed themselves. There was this disease that deer got here a few years ago called Chronic Wasting Disease and they needed to be killed.

I can see why some people wouldn't want to do it but people who do aren't bad people and I don't think it shouldn't be allowed.

True, I forgot about culling diseased herds. But then, in the world I want, that would be taken care of by the natural predation of other animals--not by people with rifles. But, as we are stuck with this world, I see the need for it and have even considered cull hunting for a job.

I really would just like to see this world allowed to revert to its natural state. I mourn the fast-approaching, and probably at this point inevitable, death of this planet at Human hands.

Humanity has a great talent for killing off both other species and its own kind but it is quite unlikely it can kill off all life unless it manages to pollute and poison everything. That is quite unlikely. Individual species are quite vulnerable but life itself is quite tough.

The pollution and poisoning of everything is fait accompli.

I'm in a dismal mood today. :(

There are only three good reasons for killing an animal:

1. Self defense
2. For food.
3. If the animal is a pest and its presence is damaging to property or is unsanitary.

Anything else is macho crapdoodle.

Hunting for sport is something I don't approve of. Organized slaughter is something I benefit from but don't like. Even though I benefit from it.

Alien was much better than Predator anyway. They had no problems with killing anything, though they did leave Jonesy the cat alone, but they didn't have that much access to it...

Hunting anything for food you will consume or give to someone who needs it is okay.

Hunting anything that will try to prey on you (or your livestock) is okay.

Hunting something purely for "sport" makes no sense unless you practice a type of "catch and release" system where you let it go unharmed after you've proven your skill in being able to take it down.

Sometimes the "sport" angle gets blurred because most sport hunting allows you to maintain a healthy animal population by killing off the excess so it doesn't suffer from overpopulation (which is cruel and ecologically harmful in the long run) and most sport hunters do preserve and consume the meat from the animals they hunt.

Another factor involved is the delight in killing something. I find that basically repulsive but it is, in many ways, a necessity in staying alive. I have no rational logic to justify either attitude and can only face it emotionally.

I think, basically, because the Predators were hunting for sport. Hunting an armed target was a challenge. Hunting something utterly harmless would be a complete waste of time.

One is morally justified in killing something if and only if it is delicious.
