Do you believe in God?

I actually remember the day I stopped believing in God. It was the same day I was told that spiderman and superman don't exist. I spent the whole day pondering what was real and what wasn't. I gave up believing in God and Santa Claus on the same day and for the same reasons. I was 7 years old.

Since I realised I was aspie I have always thought of religion as a NT thing. Totally driven by the desire to bond with peers and utterly dismissive of reason and logic. However, I have noticed a lot of posts on here where people have made clear they do have a "faith" (for me synonymous with "superstition")

So, I've decided the only way to settle this is with a totally unscientific poll on the wrong planet forums.

Blimey, I was tickled pink to see that 66% of the voters were Atheists - until I saw that there were only three votes dammit.

I never really believed in any deity, the first moments I really gave the subject a thought was when I was 6 years old and I declared atheist. And remained atheist.

I doubt though that religion would be more/less specific to NTs than aspies, I believe this is entirely depending on the personal and cultural backgrounds of somebody regardless if he is neurotypical or in the autism spectrum.

I have hypotheses about the universe, but God is not one of them.

This is perhaps the first time I have ever heard anyone denounce God because of Spiderman.


Anyways, I began to question God when I was about 10 or so. I stopped questioning God at around 20 or so. Despite having had similar views as atheists before, I find it difficult to understand how a person can actually be an atheist and not be blind and deaf.

Although I don't belong to a church I do beleive in God.

Well as previous I believe in God because once I prayed to him and this Angel came to me singing.
She had the most beautiful voice. At that time I was contemplating suicide and it was hell in my mind. She gave me peace like what I had never experienced.

That's quite harsh. I understand people believing, but the way you say it sounds as if there was any concrete proof of god's existance and thus only ignorant people would be atheist.

As far as I know no concrete proves exist that any deity existed. Believers want others to respect their faith (which is only normal) but a bit of respect for those who have a different opinion would be quite nice actually.

Yes, but not in the religious sense. I believe the gods of mythologies and religions were all in fact advanced extraterrestial beings posing as gods, using us as cattle, creating religion to separate us-- to divide and conquer. Keeping us in a constant state of war and strife, keeping us submissive.

But anyway. Yes I do believe that there is a creator..A universal source, an intelligent one. Not an omnipresent, all-knowing wraithful god.. And not a separate entity, exactly-- Everything originated from the same source, a singularity, and so in essence we are all extensions of this "source". And the galaxies, universe/multiverse, stars, planets and peoples..are just different manifestations of god you could say. Since everything is energy when you break it down, after all. We are a collective mind/universal soul experiencing itself individually.

However I also believe that the Creator--at least, a major part of him/her/it-- has been cut off from us somehow, not purposely but due to certain circumstances..Something went terribly wrong along the way with us humans due to false gods manipulating, slaughtering and enslaving us even to this day, shrouding the planet, blocking us from god (but that will not last for much longer)
Err, that makes no sense I know, can't really explain my reasoning for that one but there you go.

Although, to be honest, only quite recently have I started using the term 'God' again. When I was younger, certain people assumed that I was referring to God in a very specific, Christian, and often evangelical Christian way, when in fact I don't believe that way at all. So people would think I was on the same tack as them, until they found out how I viewed Him/Her/It, then they usually got mad at me for using the word God because what I believed in wasn't (to them) God. I found that at least if I used terms like Spirit or Being, it was obvious we weren't on the same wavelength - which didn't stop the arguments, it just got them over with quicker. (Still used to get people writing stuff like God bless (yes, Him!) in birthday cards, though. Which was more irritating than endearing.)

Less bothered about the cultural baggage than I used to be, because so much of what we humans have to say about God is simply cultural baggage or our own prejudices. Apart from God being Love, which we seem to have a hard time actually getting.

I was baptized as a Catholic and have stayed Catholic ever since.

Hopefully an AS Catholic girl who is liberal
and believes in LGBT Rights will make contact
and something can happen.

It's very difficult to understand someone who professes to be Catholic and a supporter of LGBT rights; the bible is very specific about god's judgement of practising Homosexuals.

While I'm on the subject, I've noticed a lot of voters claiming to be believers without an allegiance to some sort of organised religious group. Although cosy, I think this is a little bit of a cop out; this means of course you don't have to think about all the crazy baggage most theists have to put up with, like creationism, Noah's flood and little tidbits from the bible like god killing all the first born of Egypt (one of many examples of his love and mercy).

For me the crux of the argument should always be whether the god of the bible exists, as other theories relating to a divine creator (such as Deism, which appears to be popular reading this thread), are unknowable and irrelevant.
