We most certainly do not need a megalomaniac conquerer destroying the political and military balance of power. Napoleon's conquests changed European history forever and ignited the spark of German nationalism which eventually led to the Franco-Prussian war, World War I, and World War II. The world may not be able to survive another Napoleon.

And yet the post itself demands such a figure.

The shame of it is that with the past 30 years of presidents, more and more power has been granted to the executive office to the point where one could come to power in the near future and wage such a conquering war (as if our current conquering wars aren't bad enough).

Unlikely; there is not popular support for a war of conquest. A leader who wished to wage a full-scale war would first have to do away with democracy in America.

What current conquering wars? We haven't conquered anything.

Yeah, I mean, why can't we have a bloodthirsty powermongering person to go around the world killing scores of people?

Afghanistan and Iraq. We're not going about it the traditional way* but make no bone about it, we are a conquering force there.

*Unless you count the Iraqi concentration camps as traditional...no clue where that sits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zahkl1q7oT4

I'm aware of those conflicts. I disagree that we've meaningfully conquered anything in either country.

There are issues related to concepts such as American exceptionalism and American imperialism, I mean, it is the most powerful nation of the world, it has the ability to impose their policy on other countries and has done so, and it seems to be the only nation to have the ability to get away with anything, I hardly doubt anyone else has the capacity to convict the US for war crimes or international crimes, and that has been regarded as some sort of world domination.

Occupying force. The U.S. is not setting out to conquer either place nor can it. A Muslim nation cannot really be conquered by a non-Muslim power. But it can be destroyed.

As we are plunging into Counter-Enlightenment and Feudalism we could do with someone who can fight to reverse that trend. Someone who proudly advocates enlightenment and opposes feudalism and will militantly put into play power to that end.
