Argentina a largely Roman Catholic country has jsut shown more sense, compassion, understanding, and a great deal less bigotry than most of the worlds countries including many who would regard themselves as more advanced and progressive.

Any comments ?

i would never have imagined that a state as conservative as Iowa would countenance gay marriage. but it was forced to by court-order and seems to have accepted this without overt violence. maybe that is a hopeful sign for this country as a whole. but i am often reminded of winston churchill's description of america as a nation that will usually do the right thing only after trying and failing at everything else.

Actually, most of the Midwest is quite progressive (save for Kansas, not sure about Nebraska and the Dakotas).

I'm very happy for Argentina. I'd also like to see more countries follow suit. Not only that, but the idea of vacationing in Argentina is starting to sound more enticing.

Now regarding Iowa, I remember reading about a poll in Iowa indicating that social issues like same-sex marriage are the least of the worries of the people of Iowa. The Midwestern states largely lean Democratic, but I wouldn't say that they're Progressive.

My home state of Wisconsin banned same sex marriage and civil unions in the state constitution by referendum by a pretty large %. (it was like 60-40) Most people in the state are pretty culturally conservative outside of the ultra liberal Madison(which was the only county in the state to vote against the ban) despite voting democrat more times than not. Wisconsin is sort of a weird state politically.

The Midwest is very socially conservative. Only the South is crazier.

My post was directed to the thread title, to point out that the "us" doesn't apply to everyone on this forum.

But mostly to rub it in everyone else's faces again.

It never left. Travel to Utah and find out.

Well, okay, but legal polygamy. Not where I would have to define my other wives as concubines, and only one wife would be entitled to social security and health benefits. I would want the whole harem to be entitled to the full range of government and employer-based benefits.

Maybe you are misunderstanding something. First the rights entitled to a partner in a marriage such as hospital visitation doesnt take anything from anyones purse. The rights such as death benefits(insurance, pension) are not assigned based on the survivor, but on the policy holder. Your nine wives wouldnt each get a duplicate of these things: they would share it. Insurance/pensions are not paid out according to need/heirs, they are paid according to value accrued.

If you had four kids and a million dollar insurance policy, each child does not get a million each. You are suggesting that a polygamous wife would? In the eyes of the law your wife(s) are just heirs.

Health benefits of course would be granted to each wife, just as they would be to your under age children. But Is that such a crime? They would have any way it if they each married some other dude.

When they renounce any and all claims to the Falkland Islands in perpetuity I may start to listen.

Until then they are a backward, irredentist-obsessed nation.
