Apparently Google is trying to strike a deal with Verizon to get their services to Verizon customers faster than competitors' services. If you value an Internet where a site owner does not have to pay each ISP to ensure a decent quality of transmission, this deal is frightening. This could pave the way for customers buying various packages of Internet content (access only to particular sets of websites and other IP-based services) the way we do now with cable and satellite television.

Yeah, that's probably good practice. They tend to be among the more sensationalist news outlets.

Sounds like you've been reading too many Dan Brown novels if you think that having your browsing, e-mail, downloads, and anything else that goes through the internet, monitored by the US government is cool.

It's a joke. What I was actually trying to ask is what's the deal? Just to monitor stuff through Google?

It's a joke. What I was actually trying to ask is what's the deal? Just to monitor stuff through Google?


Ahh. Well, no one really knows what the real is. The official announcement mentioned the NSA helping Google secure their network - depending on how that's set up, it could mean that the NSA has direct access to any information it wants since it's in charge of security. I've also seen mentions of "data sharing".

But it seems pretty obvious that there has to be some information-related reason why the organisation in charge of monitoring everything has a deal with a company who's mission is to index everything.

The NSA helped the linux community develop SE-Linux. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security-Enhanced_Linux

Since its open source, its pretty obvious that no malevolent intentions are there.
