Being one of what seems to be a dying breed of patriots these days, I find it nothing less than appalling when people say that "we shouldn't have the freedoms we have" or "this country is dying because we have too much freedom." My question is: what the hell happened??? Since when is freedom such a bad thing? Since when have the ideals of self-reliance, individualism, and limited government become invalid? Why does everybody assume that people can't take care of themselves, and the government needs to do that for them? And by far the worst part about all this is that nobody seems to care. In fact, the mere mention of politics or other such things seems to make people cover their ears and sing to themselves. Am I the only person left who realizes these problems? Fellow patriots, let your voice be heard!

There's lots of people like you and we are about to be heard loud and clear in a little under a month. I suggest you take a look at the tea party.

Yes, I have been looking into them, actually. I love this country, I love what it offers me, but I hate the exploitation, the sophistry, and flat-out abuse of the government by dishonest and selfish people. This country is about freedom, and the protection thereof. One of my favorite quotes is "A man who gives up a little freedom for a little safety shall deserve neither, and lose both." Benjamin Franklin said that. It ails me to see what greed and evil have done to this country. I just wish to do good for it.

Politicians can't afford to snub public opinion in the current political climate, so there might be some change the voters approve of after the elections...or at least less "change" that the voters hate.

Except in California where things are still going to be FUBAR no matter how the elections turn out. :(

What is a patriot? One who stands by his nation, regardless of what the people of his nation do?

I think not. During the time of the Nazis, I would regard a German who fought against the evil Nazi regime a true patriot even though the people of his country had gone mad and bad.

I do not hold with the principle: "My country, right or wrong..."

What you are saying is that you are not loyal to your country but to a set of principles you feel your country should stand for. I agree.

I comprehend the anger and frustration that has led many folks to join the Tea Party. Politics as Usual is foul and rancid (and has been so a long time). I suspect the high handed way in which Obama and the liberal Democrats have acted has goaded many to join the Tea Party.

Be that as it may, I really do not see too many constructive ideas and remedies coming from the Tea Party folks. Being against is understandable but being for something beneficial is the only way we can relieve some of our ills. What is the Tea Party -for-? And please spare me platitudes about returning to our Constitution. If our Constitution were a fit framework for government we would not have drifted away from it. The logical time to have reconstituted the U.S. would have been following the Civil War. That time has come and gone. We have lurched on with petty fixes to and vast violations of the principle of limited government.

One thing that absolutely must be repaired is the perverse interpretation of the interstate commerce clause which effectively gives Congress the power to regulate the minute details of our lives, both public and private. Another issue that must be addressed is how much immunity from damages should corporations be given under the laws, both State and Federal. Right now corporations are unaccountable for their damages under Common Law yet they are arbitrarily regulated by Congress. This situation has produced corruption. Corporations now, and have for a long time, blatantly bribed the government. Any government worth having should not be worth bribing.

individual rights have been under attack in the west, from all parties.

I also can't stand it when people comment that there is too much freedom in the west. This is exactly what some muslims say and i find it ironic that while the leftists think there is too much freedom, they are always open to anti-western comments. Everyone who is aware of the cluelessness of the left will take advantage of that to curb individual liberties.

so if there is too much freedom, then someone should remove all those jihad websites that Newsweek mentions, about how to make explosives.

americans are also obsessed with the media, because they see it as proof that there needs to be less freedom. the issue with such illogic is that anyone who beleives in a certain lifestyle will have different reasons for it. therefore it is incorrect to confuse self-respecting individualists with the degenerates on the media.

Would you consider it accurate to say the Constitution is at least supposed to be about "We, the people" (as in "These United States" or "These States United") where today's "The United States" is an abusively-controlling corporation that is not?

I think most leftists have a problem with corporations having too much freedom, not individuals. It's generally the right that opposes individual freedoms such as gay marriage, reproductive rights, and freedom of religion (specifically religions other than Christianity).

of course the right works against individuality. but lately the left has diverged from its beleifs. the left stands for social mobility, nondiscrimination, and self actualization but it contradicts itself by tacitly supporting cultures that are diametrically opposed to those values, by silencing debate that criticizes anything but the west. this "pc" anti-intellectualism seems harmless, but when there are immigrants in europe committing crimes in our countries, the left is indifferent. should the leftist "pc" cult still apply when inhabitants of the west could possibly be affected?

soon muslims might start influencing Canada and Europe and the leftists would silence anyone who opposes muslim fundamentalists stripping away our freedoms.

It's understandable why American's hate America; We're in 2 un-just wars and why.. to stave off the dying Anglo-American empire with the emergence of China ? Instead of adjusting this country into the right path, we're having a Soviet Union styled demise that won't end good for us. I'm not saying American's will change governments, I'm saying it'll be a shell of it's once proud self with high unemployment, rampid poverty, taxes out of the ass.. less "freedoms" high inflation and everyone will end up bickering with each other and blaming everyone. It's called the left-right paradigm that plays off each party that's in office. They build someone up like Bush, he fails miserably, they break him down in media.. and build up the next guy in Obama. I'm sorry people - I won't accept these closed door, wallstreet before mainstreet, corporations say over our say in politics. If you're a Democrat, or Republican.. you're contributing to the downfall of America. It's a oligarchy controlled by corporate lobbiests with a corrupt banking system. We're losing our freedoms, not gaining them. Get off the trivial issues and look at what's really wrong. This is why American's hate Neo-agenda's. I love the principals this country was founded on, who doesn't ? I just want the people to control the monetary system, have our say in taxes, wars, national debt.. and get the country in the right track and not pillage what's left of it.

What empire. The closest the U.S. had to an empire was its hegemony over territory captured in the Spanish American war. After WW2 the Phillipines got their independence. Before WW2 Cuba got its independence. The Puerto Ricans do not want independence and they keep voting to stay in the "commonwealth" relation to the U.S. as a territory. All the benefits of statehood and none of the costs.

The U.S. was never much of an imperialist power and the little imperialism it indulged in went away after WW2.

You're correct, but misinterpreted me in that I wasn't thinking territorial. After the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 90's. the United States remained the lone "super power". Throughout our history- we've had close ties to England culturally, economically, and view them as our close allies. We helped them throughout history, and they've helped us. Our banking system is modeled after theirs. In 1900 the UK was revered as the most advanced, influential nation in the world.. throughout the 20th century they merged with us through trade, science, and every aspect it became the anglo-american empire., and by 2000 the US was revered like how England was. All the gains throughout the last 100 years, are at a stand still with the dominance of China, emergence of globalization and one world, one order politics .. and the lack of ingenuity with the US. We're a service-based economy now, and no longer produce like we used to. Governments aren't posing tariffs on China, and instead abide by corporate policy's while China deliberately holds their currency low. We're seeing the emergence of country's binding together like with the Nafta agreements, and Chinese agreements in Africa and South Asia. We aren't imperial in the sense, that we take over a nation and keep the land.. we set up government there, implement our monetary system and policys.. and the corporations move in.

I'm just reiterating this for the sake of understanding the anglo-american relationship. Not the conventional look at territory , although with disputes in the UN like North Pole's resources.. friends like England are helpful. Next to AIPAC, England probably has the most influence on us.
