I read some disturbing posts about some members considering suicide. If you find that you are thinking about suicide, this is a serious mental condition that requires immediate attention. You need to see a doctor immediately.

Every person in the world has equal value. Anyone who posts on this form has the capacity to contribute to the betterment of society.

Yep. Being suicidal hasn't actually got much to do with the possibility of bettering your life. It's a subjective emotional state that happens when you can't see a way out of your current situation. The problem is that if you're depressed enough to be suicidal, it's the depression itself that's skewing your ability to see those possibilities; so you're not actually looking at things realistically.

I've wanted to die several times and am glad now that I never did. Surveys of survivors of serious suicide attempts corroborate this: Very nearly 100% of the time, they report that they are glad they survived.

Ironically, if you're suicidal, you're not thinking straight enough to make a rational decision about suicide...

I also feel that posts of members wanting to commit suicide or wishing that they were aborted, very disturbing. The posts about the second thing that I've mentioned could be giving Autism Speaks fule for their fire, and I really don't want for that to happen.

Why is there such a taboo about it? In my school of thought, human death is the beginning of eternal life. Trading the pain and misery of everyday human existence for the awesome bliss of eternal life, with my AS gone sounds like quite the trade.

Note: Im NOT suicidal, im pro-life (eternal)

All of this.

When I am prone to suicidal ideation, someone telling me how much I can achieve or how much I have to live for just makes it worse. I have other coping mechanisms to keep myself from taking action that tend to work reasonably well (accountability to other people, for example). Also, if I talk about it, I am probably not looking for the kind of emotional validation that leads to "You have something to live for" but rather for someone to listen.

I talk about it here so I can get it out of my system and not have it come out when talking in real life. As you can imagine I have no problem with it, heck I'm angry futurama promised me suicide booths by 2005 and didnt deliver.

Suicide buys you a ticket straight to Hell. Who in their right mind thinks that God would openly accept someone into his kingdom for intentional ending the life that He graciously gave them. That's like receiving a gift from someone, immediately throwing it on the floor, and stomping it to pieces as they watched.

I don't believe in god or hell.

I don't believe in personal accountability to someone I cannot actually interact with.

I believe my parents were responsible for my birth. I care a lot more about how my mother would deal with it if I committed suicide than some notional supreme being that has no bearing on my life.

What is with the idea of threatening depressed people with the fires of eternal damnation anyway? That's ridiculous.

No, I think Christianity works that way. I am not sure about everyone else.

It's completely irrational and contrary to the intended goal.

God only holds you accountable for things you can control. And if you've ever been depressed, you know that you can't just willpower yourself out of it. In most cases, I think, people who commit suicide cannot be blamed for it because they have lost so much hope that they were literally not able to choose life--at least during the short time it took to choose to die. (Suicide is much more likely to be an impulsive choice than a carefully planned decision; so it's not even a question of, can you make a rational choice?, so much as, can you keep yourself from making an irrational one?) There've been times that I was too depressed to plan a suicide attempt, and that was the only reason I survived them.

There's too much blame with suicide. You don't know what it's like to be that other person even if you've been suicidal yourself, because everybody's experiences are so different. I don't think you can lay blame on anyone... you can only try to set things up to make it easier for people to get help and support, so they can survive when their own brains try to kill them.

It seems to me like the kind of help people with aspergers or autism need is different than what NTs with depression need and that its so hard to get that help which leads to incredible frustration at times.

For example, I just tried calling a support line for students who are studying by distance and I was trying to get help solving my time management, planning problems etc. while staying calm. But they didn't think I was in need of counselling because I seemed okay - it's as though you have to really lose it, cry, complain about your problems etc to be seen in need but what I needed was some really practical help - like well why don't you prioritise A, then do B, and only do C if you have time.

I feel as though the kind of help I need is never available.

An eternal life sounds awful to me. Plus there is nothing in the Bible that says what eternal life would be like. But imagine doing anything every day until the end of time without the possibility of failure. Or just having everything all the time. It makes no sense at all. What would you do... go to church all day? Praise the gods?

The most important thing to do when you feel suicidal is to get professional help. As a teacher, when I notice that a student is unusually depressed, the first thing I do is contact the school social worker. If the student expressed suicidal thoughts, I would contact security and have the student immediately escorted to the school office. I always leave counseling to the experts.

Oh dear. Why would you even think of saying something like this? When people are so depressed that they want to kill themselves they have no control over it. What is with people bringing this stuff up any chance they get? It doesn't help.
And really,
they don't think nor care about what happens to them on the other side.

I'm going to Hell anyway.

Yeah but when you're that depressed you don't want anyone's help or feel like it would do anything.
I'm not depressed now, I'm just talking about those times when I'm really down.

That's not universally the right decision. Psychiatric "help" drives me closer to suicide since it's my main PTSD trigger. I had no choice but to rely on people I knew who helped me in several ways. Some would stay over with me when I was suicidal and make sure I didn't kill myself. Some would talk to me to help me keep occupied. A small but vital few shared with me the strategies that eventually stopped their suicidal thoughts. And it worked. Psychiatry only made it worse. Not just the oppressiveness but also picking up the intense feelings of everyone else in a mental institution or group therapy. And the flashbacks from earlier abuse in the system, or from this thing there's no good words for but it's built into the power structure and if you're aware of it, it's worse than the outright abuse hands down.

I understand for a mandated reporter it's part of your job. But it's not good for everyone. To think it is... I think a lot of people want to hope it is. But it's too simplistic a view of it.

Also that view inadvertently worsened my suicidal thoughts. It went "Psychiatry was my only hope and it has failed so the only way out anymore is death". There are other ways to solve depression fortunately
