The creation of the Sabbath by Judaism (The Bible - Old Testament)

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

(Exodus 20:8)

Why did Moses invent the sabbath?

Because he wasn't smart enough to invent the 5 day work week.

There was an awesome vacation schedule, though. Way better than "We're open normal hours, 365 days a year!"

The Sabbath tradition goes back even before the Hebrews. The Babylonians distinguished the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days of their month. They called this allocation of days -the shippatum-.

Many peoples had week-like units within the month. Parts of Africa used a 4 day week, another good factor for the average month's 28 days.

So far as I know, while the submonth unit has been used in setting market days, equivalents of the Sabbath rest are not common. You can not really compare the special intercalary days of some calndars.

So what did the Babylonians do on their Sabbaths (the shippatum)?

Burn incense to their Gods/Goddesses/Hollywood idol of the week?
