Who is God?
I noticed a large number of people here are happy being atheist or simply not caring about God.
All of this comes from being force-fed God by your parents and religous leaders, the truth of the matter is they are no better a position to tell you who God is than you are!
So who is God? God is your bestest buddy, your closest friend... the guy who never gives up on you. I know how corny and sappy that sounds but this is God! If you have no one in this world, at least you have God.
God is not some Charlton Heston looking dude on some throne somewhere in the clouds... this is at best ignorant. God's the kind of guy who will show up at your house with a cold twelve pack just when you run out of beer. And God is that guy who told that other guy to pull over and help you change your tire. God is the guy who tells you to give it back when you get change for a $20 from a ten dollar bill (because you're only shortchanging the already underpaid employee), God is "that guy" as in "you know, that guy from that place with the thing"... God is not hurling lightning bolts from the heavens for fun and condemning you for being born- God is always happy to see you.
If this was Disneyland, then God would be Mickey Mouse's boss.
If we are to survive as a species, it's high time to take a hard look at God because if we look back, there's nothing but a whole lot of killing in His name and that ain't God!
I welcome comments from all athiests and nonbelievers. Personally I claim no religion as mine, I prefer to embrace all religions as the same pursuit of goodness. At the same token, I am knowledgable in "all the different gods that are all God" and welcome comments.
No ladakh you've got it all wrong.
God APPEARS to be your bestest buddy, but then if you have a falling out, or become dissatisfied with his extreme rules and regulations and your having to constantly suck up to him and accepting abuse from others because of your friendship with him he sends you to Hell (thus 'giving up' on us and don't tell me otherwise). He doesn't give any help with these problems of course, just a few instructions telling you how all this abuse is worth it, without offering any proof (all of which we are supposed to believe of course, when there is far better proof in other areas of thought).
And God isn't 'the kind of guy who will show up at your house with a cold twelve pack just when you run out of beer', he's the kind of guy who makes you pray and beg for more beer, even though you can't get it and need it desperately. What does the Bible say? God only helps those who help themselves? Well guess what! If you help yourself then you don't need anyone elses help BECAUSE YOU'RE ALREADY HELPED, JEEZ! Useless.
No, God doesn't hurl lightning bolts, that's far too obvious. He likes to test and tease us and make us doubt whether or not he exists so we can go to Hell (but this is all out of love, of course ). He prefers more of the passive agressive approach.
Yes, I am Athiest. Blame it on life experiences, but I only believe what I can see. I suppose it's easier to rely on yourself.
>>God APPEARS to be your bestest buddy, but then if you have a falling out, or become dissatisfied with his extreme rules and regulations and your having to constantly suck up to him and accepting abuse from others because of your friendship with him he sends you to Hell (thus 'giving up' on us and don't tell me otherwise).<<
-First off, can you prove there is a hell?
-Secondly, God did not make humans so we could suck up to him- that would be vain and insecure of God to do. God exists whether or not we believe in him and that's what makes him so cool- we can totally not believe in him and we won't be struck by lightning bolts for saying that. A vengeful God would be smiting people left and right.
-Third, what has God done to you that makes your life suck so much that can't be explained by other things? Do you feel bad for the guy who pisses away his life then blames god for allowing him to piss his own life away? Do you feel so bad for an alcoholic that you buy him more alcohol? Do you give a starving man a fish or teach him how to fish?
-Finally, if you can prove "God is against you" then you have proof of God!
Keep in mind I am not one of those bible-thumping idiots, I prefer logic over blind faith... or at least an intelligent conclusion. In other words, I am willing to accept it if I am proven wrong.
>>He doesn't give any help with these problems of course, just a few instructions telling you how all this abuse is worth it, without offering any proof (all of which we are supposed to believe of course, when there is far better proof in other areas of thought).<<
Proof of God? Here's a little story. One day the doorbell rings- it's God. He walks in and sits down and answers every question you have, gives you a trillion dollars in gold then leaves. How soon after God leaves do you kill youself?
How can God appear to the world and expect the world to go on after He left?
>>And God isn't 'the kind of guy who will show up at your house with a cold twelve pack just when you run out of beer', he's the kind of guy who makes you pray and beg for more beer, even though you can't get it and need it desperately.<<
Who desperately needs beer? Only people I know that are desperate for any sustinence are the 15,000 children who starve to death every day. If beer is what you need then God has already given you the capacity to make you own damn beer- what's stopping you?
>>What does the Bible say? God only helps those who help themselves? Well guess what! If you help yourself then you don't need anyone elses help BECAUSE YOU'RE ALREADY HELPED, JEEZ! Useless.<<
Who said the Bible was the final word of God? Who said everything God has to say is in one book? Are you saying the Bible is real and the other hundred other faiths are all fakes? Don't blame God if you shut your mind off after your confirmation- no one told you to stop seeking God.
>>No, God doesn't hurl lightning bolts, that's far too obvious. He likes to test and tease us and make us doubt whether or not he exists so we can go to Hell (but this is all out of love, of course ). He prefers more of the passive agressive approach.<<
Again with the hell-thing. Who said hell exists at all? Priests? And who told them- other priests? Jesus? And who wrote down Jesus' words- men? Assuming hell exists, how many priests and popes do you think there are in hell? A lot, I suppose.
>>Yes, I am Athiest. Blame it on life experiences, but I only believe what I can see. I suppose it's easier to rely on yourself.<<
You're an athiest because you were force-fed religion by ignorant people who really have no answers themselves- people as lost as you. But what seperates them from you is that they are ignorant- they believe "they believe enough to where they don't have to ask any more questions" and are happy. This is called faith, and it comes in equal portions with ignorance.
You, on the other hand, are not ignorant- God made you with open eyes. You need more information before you can start judging God and considering we have such things as the internet, there is nothing stopping you from learning more and more until it makes sense. That is the beauty of God- he offers no proof he exists, but he gives us limitless capacity to seek him. Don't blame God or humanity if you stopped- no one told you to.
"On no soul doth Allah place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns"
I have a great respect for you because you took in what society told you and it wasn't good enough. Well ya know what- you're right: it is not good enough. There is no one perfect religion- religion is a thing made by human hands so it is imperfect. The best we can do is learn and come to our own conclusions and who is stopping you?
Here's a challenge for you- make God for me. The rules are you can make God any way you want, give him any powers you want, make him do whatever you want him to... your job is to define God's job. Tell me what the perfect God is to you- tell me what is lacking in religion.
From my perspective-----The Universe is god. Uni is everywhere, they are omnipotent. "They" insinuating the duality and triessence of nature. Assuming that the Universe is infinite, which should be assumed in my opinion. The Universe is also the beginning and the end. Every end a beginning and every beginning an end. Considering that we are all elements of this unified structure, we are also part of god, and god is a part of us. This argument, to me, is true. Though it is only upon personal reflection and logical deduction that it can become true for you. This philosophy is truly a wonderful one in my opinion for it opens up doors in the self that seemed should not even exist priorly. We are all one.

All of this comes from being force-fed God by your parents and religous leaders, the truth of the matter is they are no better a position to tell you who God is than you are!
Yet you go on to tell us about 'god' as though YOU are in a better position than not only our parents and religious leaders.. but even ourselves?!
This not only elevates you above us [a pet peeve of mine- I'm adversed to people with superiority complexes] but there is not much wisdom to be had from someone who makes false assumptions about them.. then uses said assumptions to patronise.

'First off, can you prove there is a hell?'
I can prove there is a Hell as much as you, or anybody else can prove there is a Heaven. I was simply going by the generic God belief thing - as I said I'm an Athiest. I'm curious as to what you think happens to all the murderers and scum (those who have repented and those who have not) when they die.
Also, I wonder how you got your ideas about God and such? The only thing I can think of is the Bible or other religious text, which meant you picked and chose bits you did and didn't like, or built of them.
'Third, what has God done to you that makes your life suck so much that can't be explained by other things?'
Well, compaired to many, my life isn't that bad. But that's who I was compairing too: all of those who were born with mental deficits or in third world countries and get no chance at living a full life (and those who die young, also). I ask where the justice is in that? It certainly doesn't sound like something a loving God would just watch.
To me, the idea of God isn't so bad. From my point of view, I can see God as one who keeps people morally in check (well...to a higher degree than if there was no God I assume) with threats of punishment and eternal torture. This is once again going by the standard Christian deal, but I just find it too ridiculous to believe that with all the religions going around, all claiming to be the one true faith, that we're expected to choose the 'true' one. It's like some religious russian roulette, and if you choose one of the wrong ones you suffer in some eternally horrible way. I mean, even if you don't believe in Him, who wants to risk that? It's all a fear thing, not love.
'In other words, I am willing to accept it if I am proven wrong.'
That's what makes you different from thousands of other religious people and I'm glad. They get force fed by their parents or someone else in power from a young age and really have no choice but to accept (do they even realise they have a choice?). I'm just glad I was brought up in an environment of free thought, and where I chose to believe in myself and my own capabilities.
'Proof of God? Here's a little story. One day the doorbell rings- it's God. He walks in and sits down and answers every question you have, gives you a trillion dollars in gold then leaves. How soon after God leaves do you kill youself?'
Maybe I missed something here, but I don't get it. But I do think that the world would be a far better place if we were certain that in some way God did exist (and not just theories made by man, however good they may be). But then again, this is only because of the whole Hell threat, which you don't believe, right? Then everytime I mention Hell other people can respond to me. To me, these days, God is used as a scare tactic or an excuse/justification (wars anyone?).
'Who desperately needs beer?'
Beer was just an example that you used that I picked up on. It could be food, or medicine or whatever.
'God has already given you the capacity to make you own damn beer'
Now let beer be food or something else that is needed. Food needs able bodies to make it, knowledge of how to make it and the materials and resources necessary to do so. So no, God hasn't really given everybody what they need, hence the starving millions.
'Who said the Bible was the final word of God?'
Millions of Christians apparently, and it's all I've got to base my ideas/arguments on.
'Are you saying the Bible is real and the other hundred other faiths are all fakes?'
No, I said I was Athiest if you remember. They all seem as real to me as eachother for someone who believes in none of them. Well, except for Scientology, I mean come on!
'no one told you to stop seeking God.'
Except my own ideas of common sense. I mean, would you search for something you truly believed didn't exist? Nobody would, it's stupid and pointless, and it's through no fault of my own that I believe in what I do. It is my raw mind (predispositions and such) coupled with my life experiences (things in and out of my control, all influenced to some degree) that have shaped me. I'm not saying that I take no credit though, because now that I'm old enough to think dependantly I do not believe in God. Right now, in my life, it's just too illogical and until I recieve some proof to the contrary, I will continue doing the same.
