Does anyone else get bugged by the high coverage given to this shiot? First of all, monarchy? In 2011? Those people should have stopped reproducing a long ago. Second, does anyone else feel like when there is such a lame event getting such publicity and almost 95% coverage in CNN, for example. That it is an attempt to distract us? The middle east stuff is not going wrong and I cannot really get over what happened with Michael Jackson: They covered the deal excessively for months and most people didn't even notice there was a US-supported coup in Honduras...

Bread and the games of the circus, brother.

The people do not want to be informed.

The people seek entertainment. Why should the National Enquirer and Oprah hog all the good stuff?

Neither you nor I can begin to imagine what the world would be like with an informed and concerned populace. I am not sure we REALLY want to see that any more than our masters or the populace itself.

The last time we had republicanism in this country didn't turn out too well.

I'm a monarchist, but not a royalist. So I couldn't give two hoots about the Royal Wedding.

Ironically, it seems to be the Irish that have more of an interest in it than many British people.

The media must have collectively soiled themselves when it was first announced, all those hours/pages they can fill with even less work than usual.

Worst of all, this crap is set to crowd out news on Canadian politics in the closing day sof the election.

Monarchism is truly disgusting and outdated.

Muslim extremists won't do anything stupid. If they did, the backlash from the population would be swift and decisive. Any government that tried remotely to justify this sort of behaviour from any part of that community would fall immediately.

Strange, but true. My family wants to take the day off to watch the wedding. I couldn't care less about the wedding, or any royal matters. Monarchy seems to mainly be a tourist attraction, from my point of view.

You really have lame, nationalist rhetoric. Strictly speaking, I have argued in the past for abolishing the Monarch of Canada, but a funny thing is that I'm not supreme dictator - please stop refering to me as if I am identical to every single person and institution that lives in Canada and has absolute power to change anything I want.

I agree. I don't see what the Monarch does for us. I'm for strong ties to the U.K. but I'm not really of the opinion that monarchy is a good thing. There is the ancient Homeric saying:
A multitude of rulers is not a good thing. Let there be one ruler, one king

But I am inclined to disagree (or disinclined to agree? :P ), as most monarchs have gone through the path of devolution, and their existence is now merely a courtesy to them. I can think of far more harms that monarchy has done than benefits. I find it amusing when I hear people complain about nepotism and yet support monarchy

There is public support for keeping monarchy in the UK.

I don't know what the situation is like in Canada. Perhaps people are happy to keep it there?

In Australia, the situation is much more divided.

If the people in Canada want to break that link and, hell, even leave the Commonwealth - let them. We'd be sorry to see them go, of course, but each country's people must follow their own destiny. :)

Did I mention Muslims? No, I don't think so... Your assumptions betray your prejudice...

The Queen doesn't have any real power any more, even in Britain. She is a figurehead. Any attempt to exercise any of the last vestiges of power that remain on paper would lead to a) them being removed by the next government - if popular; or the abolition of the monarchy if not.
