Students consider prostitution to pay for school

BERLIN (Reuters) – One in three university students in the German capital would consider sex work as a means to finance their education, a study from the Berlin Studies Center said on Wednesday.

The figure in Berlin, where prostitution is legal, was higher than students surveyed in Paris (29.2 percent) and in Kiev (18.5 percent), the three cities the report looked at.

The study found some 4 percent of the 3,200 Berlin students surveyed said they had already done some form of sex work, which includes prostitution, erotic dancing and Internet shows.

The results surprised the study's authors, who said they undertook the study because student prostitution had been often reported but little was known about its relationship to education policy.

"The main motivation of students to turn to prostitution were the financial incentives, namely the high hourly wages," Eva Blumenschein, one of the study's authors and a 26-year-old student at Berlin's Humboldt University, told Reuters.

Blumenschein said recent educational reforms aimed at speeding up students' time at university may play a role in them seeking out sex work.

"It's possible that because educational reforms have increased student workloads, they have less time to earn money," she said. "Coupled with higher student fees, in this instance, leads students into prostitution."

Thirty percent of students working in the sex industry were in debt, the study found.

That compared with 18 percent of students who said they would consider sex work who were in debt.

There is nothing wrong with working one's way through college.

Why give away what can be sold?

Very true. Too many college girls simply giving it away. What a waste of economic resources.

Springs to my mind - even in Europe, what sort of education available today is worth even shoplifting for?

I'm sure that it beats ending up with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, that many people will be spending their lives trying to repay.

I don't regret not selling sex at university.

I wonder if any of them men on here do? (regret not selling sex, that is).

Bandy Width topic

I have read of women who pay for university by working in strip joints, doing centrefolds, and as companions to older men who have losts of money. This is not something I would consider. 8O

I had to leave education for a number of reasons, poverty being a big one - there was just no way I could afford to go to university and now with things as they are here in the UK I imagine many poorer students will not be able to afford an education. Lack of education means getting trapped in poverty - if you have to sell your body to give yourself and your family a future, so be it...I'd not have become a prostitute, but damn straight I'd have gone into another form of sex work if I could have.

Prostitutes can generally make a lot more money than college professors.

Your replies are so screwed up. Can you not see that this is the result of the removal of all the post WW2 gains made by the working class. Education should be free and accessible to all, not restricted to an ever decreasing percentage of the population. That students are left with little or no option but to sell their bodies to gain an education is abominable. Most of us on this forum live in society's that should have a decent standard of living across the board, and yet many find prostitution as a means to an end an acceptable evil, or as can be witnessed by ruveyns response not even an acceptable evil, but a fully sanctioned form of the capitalist society that we are all so fortunate to live under. A view point that I for one believe is so so wrong!! !

Right but if you have to pay for college you should be able to be an escort or stripper.

This is actually quite common in Japan, even at the highschool level. I remember reading about it during the asian financial crisis when middle class girls, who had grown accustomed to a standard of living got involved in it so as to maintain their lifestyles.

In the West, I think what has changed, is the level of desperation one needs to feel to resort to this sort of behavior. While there certainly are Fantines out there, it seems one need no longer be out just to feed Cosette. We live in such a permissive society now... despair combined with entitlement is breeding all sorts of misery.

And what is "wrong" if someone sells sexual services voluntarily. Is it any worse than painting houses for money (done voluntarily)? It could be honest labor as long as it is not forced.
