It will not lead to people marrying animals, corpses, children and vacuum cleaners. As well, they can't give consent.

But what if it leads to a vengeful deity smiting America with holy fire?

if you think the human being's sexual orientation is fixed, then there is no societal harm with same-sex marriage.

There's no societal harm with same-sex marriage because a lack of an oppression is not a harm.

Why marry your vaccuum cleaner when you could marry the Eiffel Tower?

In Canada, where same-sex marriage has been legal for quite a while now, a politician recently lobbied to reopen the issue because he was trying to ingratiate himself to the conservative voters. He was scoffed at by everyone, and nobody, not even the conservatives, would support his misbegotten cause. Apparently it was abundantly clear to everyone by this time that same-sex marriages had not wrecked families or the fabric of society.

In fact, its only real effect appears to have been on income tax. Revenue Canada now considers all roommates, even of the same gender, as a common-law married couple when it comes to filing their taxes, whether or not they are in a relationship with each other. They are probably hoping that a law allowing polygamous marriage is passed, so that three or more roommates can be taxed as all being married to one another.

What does a fixed sexual orientation have to do with anything?

Not it won't lead to that...It will lead to something most people seem to consider even stranger: equality.

Not to get off the subject of same sex marriage, but that article really intrigued me. It's absolutely no surprise to me that people with sexual attractions to inanimate objects tend to have Asperger's. As the article points out, going beyond the desire to have sex with "things" is the notion among Aspies (me included) that inanimate objects have feelings and maybe even souls and are sentient. Especially my car.
Leave it to us Aspies. :)

everyone is oppressed in some way, I reserve the term for true un-free oppression in which the important things in life are in the control of the oppressor ie the right to own property, be with who you wish to be with, the right to meet and organize, the right to voice your opinion - even in dissent, and do all of these things without fearing for your life... that type of stuff

law-enforcers and order-preservers are oppressive - in that you can't just do what you want to do - though few would argue that they are no long necessary, unless you think progress is inevitable and we can go alone on autopilot.

My opinion was specific so societal harm is contingent on what I wrote.

Well, my slant on it is simple.

Hell will freeze over before I peacefully consent to living under one law while someone else lives under another, and it is not up for discussion, debate or negotiation. I am not even close to joking. When you are discussing the idea of putting me and someone else under two different systems of law, you are initiating a war. I see it as a war, and I treat it as a war. I don't feel obligated to be nice or civil over it.
