If people are paying taxes why is it wrong for some of that tax money to go to welfare? why is attempting to make sure all the citizens have their basic financial needs met bad? what would be a better use of the tax money that goes to welfare?

and if welfare was abolished what do you suggest happens to the people benifiting from it?

Also what specific forms of welfare do you have an issue with.....are you opposed to food stamps but not medicaid, medicaid but not food stamps, everything but disability?

I'm the wrong person to ask, since I believe in progressive taxation as a means to redistribute sufficient wealth to ensure that all individuals are guaranteed access to a minimal standard of the necessities of life. I subscribe to the view that every cut we make to welfare, and every impediment that we erect to access, will be reflected in higher rates of property crime.

I will have to leave it to my colleagues who espouse small government to take up the contrary position.
