Let's say you know she/he is guilty, and they are a beloved family member or friend. Would you turn them in or cover for them?

Personally I would turn them in UNLESS the death penalty was on the table. In that case I would cover for them but otherwise I would turn them in. Someone who is ill enough to murder obviously needs to be confined, but I don't think I could turn in a loved one if it meant they would die for their crimes. I would feel like I was the one who killed them.

Ill assumes a lot.

I am assuming the alleged murder [do we know all we need to know about the incident] happened at least ten years before the person became a loved one - or what kind or relationship is this?

Unless the alleged murderer is parent, sibling, or offspring. That could be.

Conceivably, talk to the person and urge some sort of action.

I like to think I have enough of the Desert Father spirit, and am sure I have enough of the Stealth Instinct, not to rurn the person in.

But that applies not only to family.

I guess for me too it would depend on whether the person seemed likely to do it again. Punishment in America is mostly based on revenge, and prison is basically a sentence of torture from other people in jail, so I would put that into consideration too.

It depends on the circumstances and also the reason the person committed murder. I wouldn't cover for a loved one if they did something totally scandalous like murdering a young child or killing someones family, but i would cover for someone that actually mattered to me if like someone tried to rob them or harm them and in turn, killed the person to protect themselves. Or if there was some other really good reason for killing someone, yea, I'd cover for ya.

I don't follow that whole "law abiding citizen" BS.

Unless the victim is another loved one, yes.

There is a good reason why spouses can't be forced to testify against their couples.

Depends on the murder.

IF the murder if of the sort of those that are caused by desperation or sudden rage (crime of passion).

If it was a serial killer or some sort of sadistic nut I think it would be for the best for that loved one to go to jail (including the loved one).

I would not turn them in, but I would not lie if questioned.

I'm no good at lying or "covering for people" anyway.

Are you answering the "would you turn them in" question or the "would you cover for them" question?

When the Unabomber was turned in by his brother that was a big deal in talk radio.

But if I had a relative who was a heinous serial killer comparable to the unabomber it would be inconcievable NOT to turn him in.

But in other circumstances I might not turn someone in.

I'd like to think that this is what I'd do. In all honesty, though, I would be flung into a state of neurotic indecision due to the anxiety and conflicting sentiments such as situation would put me in.

No. I would turn them in, and without hesitation.

well, crime of passion, etc, I'd have to just tell them that they should turn themselves in because i won't lie for them.

If a loved one went and killed somebody (not in self-defense) and came to me expecting me to cover for them two things would go through my mind;
1. f**k you for putting me in this situation I would never do this to anybody, especially a loved one;
2. I have no intention of impeding justice and thereby being sent to prison for anybody especially not a willingly guilty person. Blood relation or no.
