WSJ: After Debate, Clash with Megyn Kelly, Trump Surges in Iowa Poll
WTF
This seriously makes me question the way people view women.

If Trump becomes the republican candidate it's either the end of the republican party or the apocalypse.

To disrespect an entire gender on such a base claim makes me fear for humanity.

This is just another example of polling bias. How can anyone make an accurate prediction from all the skewed data means is beyond me.

Talking crudely about women probably appeals to a lot of men.

Specifically, the I'm-a-real-man type.

Crude, I'm-a-real-man talk:
-an obese women is fat b**tch
-I put that b**tch in her place
-cranky then "must be PMSing".
-women as sex objects
-Not going to have this b**tch tell me what to do
-no time for political correctness

Why characterise his supporters that way? Some people are simply drawn to those who speak their minds, including a lot of women and no matter how offended others may be. He took quite the roasting himself, yet I (quite rightly) don't see you jumping to protect him from being upset or offended.

Megyn Kelly's a big girl, I don't think she needs you to diminish that in the name of some hideous ideological agenda.

That is analogous to someone attending a white supremacist rally and saying, "I'm not here for the racist views, I'm just here because I like people who speak their mind".

Trump and his followers must believe what he says too. For example, they must think it is OK to call women "bimbos".

Trump is fascinating to me. He's the most interesting thing to happen with politics in at least 2.5 years.

It's not even close to analogous, unless you want to claim that Trump is the high priest of a woman-lynching male-supremacist cult - for which we'll need to see some evidence.

What's your problem with the word 'bimbo'? You had no problem claiming my views were on a par with those of a Klan member - surely most would consider that more offensive?

Trump is a total jerk. How can he make that comment about McCain?

McCain was a prisoner of war. Yes, he was "captured"--but he was involved in a war. Many people are captured in a war.

if he gets the Republican nomination, the Democrats will get in--no question about it.

I know it's been said before, but the key to understanding the appeal of Trump is realizing that it's not in any way about the positions he takes or what he actually says, but the way in which he speaks his mind and shoots from the hip, marking him as not a politician, which is what people are responding to. They're so tired of professional politicians who won't take a dump without consulting a focus group and a room full of strategists that a self financed blowhard breaking all the rules of politics has a certain appeal, regardless of who dumb what he says actually is.

So the less a politician considers the experience and value of others, the better? It is not an achievement to be able to verbally spew whatever crap comes into your head. Trump is the embodiment of vain, egocentric buffoonery. He's amusing, but eventually he'll offend everyone.

on those who count trump out, remember the prescient and ever-pertinent words of h.l. Mencken- "nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public." if raygun could fool enough voters, then surely The Rump could as well.

I would not be so sure about that. there is a "cycle" involved here, not since FDR has a democrat or democrats managed to occupy the white house for more than 8 consecutive years. it is not likely to happen this time. the "other shoe" is waiting to drop on Hillary. the fix is in. I say this with the utmost resignation and disgust.

Try reading what I actually said; people are responding to Trump because he comes off as authentic compared to what they're used to, or at least far less scripted, not because he's a good guy or has admirable qualities.

Click me.

Agree that the appeal with Trump is probably largely personal, like with Farage. My concern is that people might adjust their beliefs to match the charismatic candidate in order to prevent cognitive dissonance.

It would be interesting to see to what extent the cults of Sanders and Corbyn (or other left-wing-but-inside-the-mainstream Western political "revolutionaries") reflect those of Trump and Farage. Is it pure charisma winning over dissatisfied left-wingers, or is there more appreciation for policy?
