I'll take care of loving thy gay neighbor. If he's cute.

Guys! Guys! The "love" in thou shalt love thy neighbor as you love yourselves is NOT erotic love.

(shrug) yer missin' out, ruveyn.

Then again, given my somewhat mediocre track record, I'm not lovin' too many of my neighbors, anyway.

What are we to do?

If the neighbor's wife happens to have a sexy ass, is it okay to covet it, as long as we don't act upon our covetousness and try to handle it?

No. Remember, it is not what you take into your body that defiles, but rather what comes out. Sin originates from within. Therefore covetousness without action still is what it is.

So... Be happy with the ass the Lord blessed you with.

the thinking is that we may love and gladly help out our neighbor next door (that we do know), but not the one many blocks down the road struggling to make ends meet and feed their children (that we don't know). Tax redistribution helps take care of all the people we don't know, because one person cannot do a lot to help them out, but collective, government can be that vehicle to achieve that goal? Or at least that's how Lewis Lapham articulated it.

Now much of that tax-charity actually gets to the people it was intended to help and does it really help?

A lot more than if there wasn't any such help. And to answer your second question - definitely.
