Karl Rove wrote an opinion piece in the WSJ, and not much is revelatory but his opening is clarifying and put a few things into perspective for me.

it seems this time a few years back, this is how the polls looked:

mccain did not take his first lead till janurary of the new year, he didn't pull away by a sizable margin till feburary, and he didn't capture the nomination till march when huckabee seceded. Even throughout most of the summer and fall of 2007, Guiliani and Thompson lead the polls.

Perry is not that far ahead of Romney. This same time a few years back, Mccain was trailing in third place. I think the following excerpt from the Rove article might explain why some people think that Perry will take the nomination:

Quote:
Republicans are increasingly enthusiastic about the field (last month's poll by the AP and the GfK market research company says two-thirds "are pleased" with it, up from just half in June). But they appear slower to lock in and quicker to change their commitment. They're more concerned than usual about getting the right candidate with the record, passion, appeal, fund-raising and fortitude to make President Barack Obama a one-termer.

Normally, if a candidate makes a mistake, most supporters excuse him or her and many undecided voters are slow to form judgments. Now everyone offers a verdict as quickly as it takes Olympic judges to raise their placards. Sometimes those scores punish a contender so badly it is difficult or even impossible to recover.

I think in the end, only Romney can defeat Romney. He has no equal in the field of candidates, including Obama come election.

Perry has now fallen from a high of 10 points down to just 4. Romney is rising. Hermain Cain has also risen from Florida as Fox News has Romney in the lead, perry trailing by 4, and cain trailing Romney by 6. Cain has managed to leapfrog every other contestant and now has major momentum comparable to when Perry entered the field.

compare the journal then to it's pre-rupert days... the only argument that can be made is that it has become more main-stream or huffington-post like but it is still one of the finer journals out there, conservative opinion or not.

Karl Rove has always had insightful opinions and his insight would have been sought out and published by the journal even if Bush had lost in 2004.

Karl Rove is a fat, pompous, corrupt traitor to the nation.

Nah, we just share in the simple belief that poor people should be sent to the moon.
