Unfortunately for those who are so paranoid about the Illuminati, they see it everywhere. Or at least, they think they do.
The Illuminati aren't in control of any government. And we don't need to worry about a New World Order, because it's not going to happen. Hitler tried it, and he failed miserably. A New World Order simply wouldn't work. It's impossible to rule a planet this size with just one government. It would fall to pieces in less than a year.

On a more realistic front...

The real-world "secret" society known as the Illuminati folded in 1786, ten years after its founding, when Karl Theodor, once rejected for membership, became king of Bavaria, and outlawed secret societies. It helped that, having been an applicant, he knew who was in charge, so he could raid their homes and seize all materials relating to the group.

Currently, the only Illuminati are a group of fans of the Steve Jackson Games card-game Illuminati!, modeled after the Shea and Wilson Illuminatus trilogy, a tongue-in-cheek look at the nature of conspiracy theories.
