The anti-royalist in me is somewhat sad about the number of monarchs on this list.

Me too. Though it is accurate in a way, as the list isn't really referring to "most influential" or "fought for women's rights" but reflects how much power they had available to them. Unfortunately up until the last century powerful women were almost exclusively royals

Why should we be surprised?

Almost all powerful figures prior to the 18th century were monarchs. Given that women were precluded from most religious and civil offices, it stands to reason that the few women that were going to achieve real power would wind up being monarchs in their own right since there was virtually no other path to power for women.

Rather than lamenting the number of powerful women in history who were women, perhaps we should celebrate the small progress that we have made in creating a society in which the exercise of power is not the exclusive prerogative of men.

The most powerful men in history ( not the greatest but the most powerful) were mostly kings, or soldiers, until a couple centuries ago. So its hardly surprising that its the same with women.

I hope Queen Esther will come back and convince those Muslims to load up all of their nuclear weapons in order to propel a rocket ship to Mars so the Middle East can be a nuclear free zone.
