Okay, everyone (particularly Americans) get out your angst about the American North or South in this thread.
Try to keep it at least a bit substantive, though I'll accept some of the blame if this thread devolves, since I kind of set it up to entertain contention -- as well as for contentious entertainment. It's just that I read so many little jabs here and there about the North and the South on WP, I thought we should have a thread in which to just get it all out of our systems -- if that's possible.

The South is supposedly dumb and nice, and the North is supposedly smart and mean.
If I'm remembering correctly, Kennedy wryly described Washington D.C. as a place of "Southern efficiency and Northern charm".

So, give your two cents' worth.

The south WILL rise again- right after we get these bathtubs and old rusted engine blocks off our front lawns

Well, maybe "dumb", but not necessarily "nice." Your side did fire the first shots on Fort Sumter.

So how come the south had slavery forever while in the north slavery was limited to 7 years indentured service?

Why are we still fighting a war that nobody really seemed to want in the first place?

I'd support the South in a civil war. Northerners are far more racist anyway.

You guys never heard of the Great Migration?

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... =129827444

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Migr ... n_American)

Famous White Southern Hospitality caused a very large number of Blacks to migrate out of the south. So much so that Blacks ceased to be a majority in South Carolina and other states.

This graph shows the number of racially motivated murders, aka "lynchings", per decade.

Not true. Slave brought north from the Southron States were property under the law of all states. The Constitution requires that the judicial acts of one state be recognized in all.

What was illegal in many northern states was buying and selling humans as slaves.

The Slave Trade was illegal, not Slavery.

The first man to be declared a perpetual slave in the American colonies was John Casor in 1654.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Casor

His owner, Anthony Johnson, had been kidnapped from Angola, and became an indentured servant in Virginia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Casor

After several years of indenture, he was free, which was the typical arrangement for both European and African people in Virginia at the time.

Perpetual slavery of Blacks in America actually started with one Black man having his own Black servant declared his servant for life.

I recently read an article regarding tombstones decorations in the 1800s or around. It was quite amusing to see the evolution of the motif carved. From Death's heads, to cherubs and to willow-and-urn motifs. At some point though, it was particularly interesting to note that a tomb reserved to two black people were carved with Death's heads, which was reserved for children, even though they were adults and that the other "white" adults used the cherub motif. =/ I could probably look up the reference if you guys want the name of the cemetery. The article did revolve around the northern thirteen colonies. :o So uh, Plymouth county... Rhode Island was mentionned... Massachusetts... I can't remember the rest from memory. =/

Of course, there were multiple reasons for the Civil War but at heart it was largely about slavery but not at all "state's rights" so do not attempt that trick.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics ... wars-cause

ALL states in the CSA were required to be slave states, unlike in the USA. State's rights were just not the cause of the Civil War.

And the so-called poor "whites" who fought for slavery really had far more in common with the African-American slave than the plantation owning elite of the old south.

Do you really think that human beings can be owned by other human being; bought, sold or traded?
