Petition found here:
www.avaaz.org/en/eu_save_the_internet/?fp

Quote:
ACTA - a global treaty - could allow corporations to censor the Internet. Negotiated in secret by a small number of rich countries and corporate powers, it would set up a shadowy new anti-counterfeiting body to allow private interests to police everything that we do online and impose massive penalties -- even prison sentences -- against people they say have harmed their business.

Europe is deciding right now whether to ratify ACTA -- and without them, this global attack on Internet freedom will collapse. We know they have opposed ACTA before, but some members of Parliament are wavering -- let's give them the push they need to reject the treaty. Sign the petition -- we'll do a spectacular delivery in Brussels when we reach 500,000 signatures!

Spread the word about this to as many as you can! Organize peaceful demonstrations in your city, and participate in them!

again the backlash will be greater than any gain they could even dream about,

if they get any further a new #J18 will happen and millions will be lost for every day untill change is made.

(the petition site reached their goal faster than they could administrate the physical side of delivering them, so instead of half a million they will now set a date and see hoow many sign)

Already posted about it on my facebook page...but you know what those clowns trying to pass these bills fail to realize. They'll just provide a fun challenge for hackers and before you know it we'll have people paying hackers to fix up their computers to get around whatever that bill does to the internet.

they should have learned this with prohibition, people will find a way around the laws if the laws aren't fit to be followed.

This is far too important to merely be on the PPR forum. This is about the future of the Internet. This forum even had a bar at the top, before, urging people to help stopping SOPA - this is a law even worse than that! Why doesn't it get the same treatment? It should at least be spread out on several forums, so as many as possible will have time realize this very severe threat.

it's not really a random topic.

Sure it's random, as well - the amount of censorship it will allow is definitely random. Focusing on how to define this thread shouldn't be done, though; this is too important to be restricted to just certain parts of the forum.

At least ask Alex about a bar at the top? This is at least as important as SOPA (which is about to be passed under the name HR 1981 'Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers', by the way).

Quote:
The United States signed onto the agreement in October. Ordinarily, treaties need to be submitted to the US Senate for ratification, but the Obama administration has adopted the novel (and, some have argued, constitutionally dubious) approach of declaring ACTA an "executive agreement" that can be adopted unilaterally by the executive branch, as it ostensibly does not alter existing US law.

Actually it'll officially be ratified on June 14th, 2012 when the EU holds a final vote on it. Signing it does not equal ratification then enforcement yet. Still a chance to protest and stop this thing. But after that day... Game over.
