Calvin and Hobbes is one of the best ever. It doesn't cover atheism overtly, or very often, but it is obvious to me that the author is atheist.

Son-o-God comics from National Lampoon.

See: http://www.ugo.com/the-goods/son-o-god

For the very devout it is very offensive which is why it is a hoot to read.

yes- if you read anything it needs to be maus!

also i quite liked dykes to watch out for .its a mix between slice of life and political drama centred around a group of queers with diverse sexual, gender and racial identities and deals with anything from gender politics to anti war protests. it cracks me up.

only some of it is online.

I can recommend "The Cartoon History of the Universe." It is kind of depressing, but it tells the truth. The history of mankind must include the almost non stop wars, which determined who ran that part of the world. He manages to inject some (black) humor and wit into each panel. Gonick covers parts of world history usually left out of my old school textbooks. I suspect yours too. I haven't read the other one you mentioned, but will look for it.
