The Rev. Randall Radic of the First Congregational Church in Ripon, Calif., sold the church for $460,000, then bought himself a BMW and pocketed the rest of the cash. "He apparently saw [the church] as a source of money for himself," said San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Phil Urie. But Radic laid a Get Out of Jail Free card on prosecutors: he has information on a local murder, and cut a deal where he will testify in the murder trial if he gets no jail time for his embezzlement and nine other felony counts. Prosecutors accepted the deal, leaving the congregation sputtering. "My undoing is truth," Radic says on his web site. "I decided to say the truth and that has led me down some very interesting paths and complicated my life." Radic, 54, had to pay restitution as part of his plea bargain, and has signed a book deal to tell his story. "Not to read him is a crime," Radic says on his web site, which shows him holding a glass of wine, smoking a cigar, and looking toward a woman dressed in high heels, angel's wings ...and nothing else. "Not to publish him is a sin."

why? at least he's honest about conning people. 99% of religion isn't and manipulates people beyond simply taking their money.

In a manner, it can be worse. It's like saying out loud, "I got away with your money, b*****s! Wahahahahahahahahaha!! !!" and mooning his former flock. There are dimensions of worseness. He was able to get away scot free, and everyone knows it. That can make it harder, especially his flaunting so-called truth. I say we get a toecutter in to get the money back.

yeah but he turned in a murderer for it.

not to mention the church takes more money than that and never tells anyone anything that's done with the money.

the vatican bank doesn't keep public records for good reason.

when you willingly give money, you should beable to see where it goes and how it's spent.

this is why mother theresa is such a point of contention.....money donated to her cause went to the vatican bank and so there's no way to trace where it went or what it did.

Not on topic at all, but how do you feel about income taxes? Or taxes in general?

And also, what exactly is awesome? I don't understand.

1. it helped put a murderer behind bars (screw safety in confession...lock 'em up).
2. it has made that many more people skeptical of religions and who to trust.
3. that guy just looks really pimpin on the webpage.

as far as income taxes go...i hate it. i think it's basically a modern version of taxation without representation. in the end, my money goes to the causes the lobbyists champion instead of causes that benefit society and causes that i personally back. it's a misappropriation of my funds.

Awesome? Eh, I don't think I'd say that. But an interesting story? Most definitely.

Pfft! I presume that a good deal (not a majority, but a good deal) of money given to the church is given to charity, or used to fund charity work. However, I have heard dodgy things about Vatican banking, though it's more to do with their ties to the Mafia. Business in Italy can be dodgier than most, I've heard, thanks to "favors"...

and I have heard of small churches in the Sunshine Coast requiring congregations to pay tithes 10% to the pastor who just lives off it. You only need a congregation of 10 to have a higher average income than the congregation.
