...although perhaps not quite so hilarious for the two poor bastards in the clink:

Quote:
Court acquits 2 men jailed for ‘looking gay’ and drinking Bailey’s Irish Cream (thestar.com)

DOUALA, CAMEROON—A court has overturned the conviction of two men who were sentenced for five years in prison for “looking gay” and ordering Bailey’s Irish Cream.

The Court of Appeals Monday acquitted the men and ordered their release. The two men had already spent more than a year in jail where they were subjected to abuse from guards and other prisoners, according to human rights advocates.

The new ruling has been hailed by human rights lawyers and gay rights advocates who urged President Paul Biya to release all other prisoners found guilty under the country’s harsh anti-gay laws.

I am gobsmacked but not surprised at all, given some of the unintentionally side-splittingly funny scribes I've read about gays in the newspapers of African countries (like Uganda).

I wonder if this is one of the next issues for the Commonwealth to take up.

There are a number of African Commonwealth member states whose track record on gay rights is less than stellar. Uganda and Cameroon both leap immediately to mind. I am sure that the big 4 would not be sorry to see fewer calls on Commonwealth largesse at CHOGM (Or as rumour has it that they were called in Thatcher's time, "Compulsory Hand-Outs for Greedy Mendicants).

The story of African homophobia is funny and sad.

From what we know about traditional African societies, it seems that many of them had homosexual traditions along the lines of ancient Greece. Homophobia is a Western import. And now Africans justify their homophobia by saying that homosexuality is a Western invention which is "un-African".

It seems like post-colonial Africa is cursed to be afflicted with the same diseases as the Western world, except with a time delay. The same thing is happening with fundamentalist Christianity. Just as the Western world is managing to shrug it off, it is spreading like wildfire in Africa. Maybe in a hundred years, the West will have constructed a socialist utopia, and Africa will be playing with neoliberal economics...

Ugandan dictator Yowero Museveni is a member of an American right wing Christian fundamentalist cult called The Family... he is also responsible for millions of deaths in central Africa.

There's another ridiculous practice in western Africa which is to ban any opiate as being evil as they'd rather have people in agony than give them any pain relief. That's more awful so-called morality. I wonder from where they got these stupid ideas. Let me guess; it comes from the same place as from where Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper got this idea that it's best that people die of overdoses and AIDS than it is to show approval of drug use through safe needle exchanges and injection sites! That killer can't stop trying to use the courts to shut these down. Better that people suffer and die than have people question our official morality!

As is David Bahati, the proposer of the "kill the poofs" legislation. Horrible, horrible people.

Speaking on behalf on brainwashed liberals everywhere, I would like to confirm that it is in fact okay to fight against and make fun of African homophobia.

However, you are legally required to point out that African homophobia is Our Fault at least once every ten minutes, or you will be tracked down by the Politically Correct Brigade and transported to a holding cell.

I suppose you've heard about the 'gay text message' case in Cameroon, as well.

Africa is both incredibly religious and homophobic in equal measure. I dont this that is a coincidence.

Westerners mock them for this, ironically it was western missionaries that imported these attitudes in the first place through the old testament.

Museveni is totally untouchable. I mean he invades a neighbouring country, and he's a dictator with a self-proclaimed "no party state" and within moments of the invaders setting up camp in that country the Western powers start demanding a "democratic transition" for the invaded country in order to appease the invaders!

I must have missed a meeting. Last time I check, unqualified support ended at the borders of Gaza and of South Africa. Everywhere in between we were supposed to be free to proceed.

I think it's worth giving these another airing, don't you?
