Crisps offend religious sensibilities

The name ‘Virgin Mary’ is commonly used to describe spicy tomato juice – by contrast with ‘Bloody Mary’ – vodka and tomato juice. So I’m not sure why anyone should find it so very shocking that Pret A Manger chose to give the same name to its own spicy tomato flavour crisps. And I’m equally unclear why Pret A Manger should have taken the drastic step of withdrawing the crisps from sale.

/\
By crisps I assume you mean what we call tater chips over here.
I think it was pretty candy ass of the of the manager to take them off the shelves just to avoid manufactured offense.
How is that store, since it's there in-house product, going to cover their investment?

If you click the link, there's a little more to it.

Yes, I mean potato chips.

Here's another (very recent) ludicrous story from the kooks at Pret A Manger:

Quote:
Revealed: Pret a Manger's bizarre 'emotional labour' rules for workers who are told to 'be happy', touch each other and NEVER act moody
  • Pret staff must 'be charming', 'have presence', and create a 'sense of fun'
  • Employees should not 'annoy people' or be 'moody' or 'bad-tempered'
  • Mystery shoppers visit weekly to ensure 'Pret behaviours' are on show
Details have emerged of a regime of 'enforced happiness' at Pret A Manger, where staff earning little more than the minimum wage are monitored to ensure they are relentlessly cheerful behind the counter.

The bizarre 'emotional labour' rules mean employees of the popular sandwich chain are expected to be 'charming', to 'have presence', and to 'care about other people's happiness', and should never be 'moody', or 'just here for the money'.

Mystery shoppers visit branches every week to ensure all staff are displaying 'Pret perfect' behaviour.

Creepy as anything.

That's what working in retail is like, unfortunately.

You're told to touch your colleagues.

I thought it was a retail store, not a bleedin' porn set.

Why else would anyone be at work if not for the money?

Forgive me, but I am a less than informed Yank. What does "crisp" mean in this context.

Alas, the United States and Great Britain forever separated by a common language.
