Quote:
London (CNN) -- Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a towering figure in post-war British and world politics, and the first woman to become British prime minister, has died at the age of 87, her spokeswoman said Monday.
Thatcher served from 1979 to 1990 as leader of the Conservative Party. She was called the "Iron Lady" for her personal and political toughness.
Thatcher retired from public life after a stroke in 2002 and suffered several strokes after that.
She made few public appearances in her final months, missing a reception marking her 85th birthday hosted by Prime Minister David Cameron in October 2010. She also skipped the July 2011 unveiling of a statue honoring her old friend Ronald Reagan in London.....

I react to this the same way I react to everyone's death - with indifference (my stupid brain doesn't quite understand the concept of 'dead' - well it doesn't generate an emotional reaction to it).

I strongly dislike her, but whatever. Definitely not celebrating.

Pretty much the last of the generation that ended the cold war. It is a sad day.

I've been reading an article about the deceased today former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

I wonder where did the nickname "Iron Lady" come from, in what context?

I know she was very hard for the Soviet Union.

Last time I checked, it was indeed her stance on the Soviet Union which gave her the nickname from a Soviet newspaper. However, nowadays, the "Iron Lady" is probably also used with reference to The Falklands War and (especially) the economic policy of her administration in the 1980s.

She was equal parts effective and offensive. She willingly sacrificed the well being of millions of people for what she perceived to be the greater good.

Is the United Kingdom better off for her leadership? It's hard to know. Certainly the privatisation of state industries was a mixed record. The demise of British resource and manufacturing industries is certainly to be laid at her feet. And so, too, is the current financial crisis. The deregulation of the financial sector had its genesis under her premiership--and was foisted upon her successors as a genie that could not be put back in the bottle. It was only with the collapse of Northern Rock that the government could step in and attempt, too late, to impose some sort of order upon the City.

But the British economy is more diverse. Lower wages in real terms mean that British workers are more productive (but are also more exploited). Could the British economy of 1979 have been sustained? No, of course not. But the same is true in every country on earth. And while Thatcherism was one possible set of policy choices to approach changing that economy, it was not the only one. Her effectiveness should not be allowed to paper over the consequences of her policy choices--and the deep divisions in British society that are her legacy.

Thatcher Dies

A debate should be encouraged now about what this woman stood for.

I always admired Thatcher.

She rejected groupthink, herd mentality, mass religion, and concepts like societies and the masses, and instead embraced individuality, something more politicians and people alike should do.

To be fair Gorbachev was relatively young when he was appointed leader of the USSR.
