Anti Thatcher Tune Most Downloaded on ITunes

A campaign has been launched to send Ding Dong the Witch is Dead to the top of the UK Charts this week.

Is this just bad taste or is this the only way democracy works now?

It is bad taste.

I would not object to a song that was specific to Thatcher or her policies, in fact I'd probably welcome it, but this is dehumanising and insensitive. It is revelling in another human's death rather than criticising her policies.

Songs I would have preferred:
(Thanks Thomas for posting below)

you need to remove the 's' in https

Thatcher destroyed the lives of millions so this reaction, as distasteful as it may be to some shouldn't be surprising. Nor should it be thwarted as the BBC and other channels are considering doing by ignoring the success of the song in question.

The idea that we must steadfastly 'respect' her because of her commitment to her convictions is ludicrous. She spent her time in power burning bridges rather than building them so it is stupid to believe we must unite in mourning. Hitler, Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden were perhaps more committed to their beliefs, does this mean we afford them the same respect?

The simple fact that so many people are revelling in her death should illustrate the strength of feeling that exists against her. This sort of thing doesn't happen normally, and people are stepping beyond their usual behaviour to make this point.

She put an end to the socialist absurdity. That alone will produce many enemies. All those little piggies feeding at the trough were required to actually earn their livings. My god! What cruelty!

I agree with the campaigner when he says this is a way for people to get their voice heard. Everybody knows this song and I have to say it is the most apt anthem for those who despised her.

The BBC are playing the moral card by refusing to play it, even if it does reach number one.

It may be upsetting to her family but they must be able to see that Margaret Thatcher is figure beyond a mere human being. She was a huge public figure and so offensive reactions must be tolerated.

She may have made those "little piggies" earn their living but at the same time she allowed the sharks to feed off them even more. And now those sharks have eaten so much there is nothing left.

Maggie Thatcher put more people on the dole than any prime minister ever!

It's another show of enraged impotence from the hateful bowels of the far-left at their failure at not being able to effect decisive change in British politics for decades.

They should be pitied and scorned more than anything. From the look of them, most of them weren't actually old enough to remember Margaret Thatcher when she was actually Prime Minister.

I bet the "corporations" they always rail against - like Apple's iTunes - are absolutely loving it though and very good for them too. Just goes to show that even the most spiteful ultra-leftist bigotry can be catered to in a capitalist society. ;)

I think those young people don't understand irony when they open champagne to celebrate her death, either.

I don't support all her policies, and I think that her policies should be criticised and debated, even trenchantly. This isn't that - it's just pure demonisation and hatred of a very complex historical figure and I think it just says a lot more about the nature of her enemies than her.

Still, let them do their worst. Thatcher will be looking down on them with a massive smile on their face for she knows that she is still winning, even from beyond the grave.

You can really, really dislike someone as a political figure and still not actually want anything to do with taking vicious, malignant pleasure in their death, especially if their death is long, long after they've left office and they've lost all political power and they weren't at the head of a dictatorship. (Thatcher was a democratically elected politician in a parliamentary democracy, aside from anything else.)

Lots of people utterly despise Tony Blair in this country - and still do - yet I doubt those same people (except for the lunatic ultra-left fringe) will be dancing in the streets and holding street parties when he dies in twenty years time.

It should be played in full. Let the haters have their fun.

Well after she helped kill effectual democracy, this type of frivelous democracy is the only outlet left.

The Tories did that in 1992, not Thatcher.

I'd say the distastefulness of the response is rooted in a kind of hopeless and nihilistic spirit.

This article - by David Vance, who a particular contributor to this thread will have a particular fondness for - sums it up for me:

Quote:
DING DONG, THE LEFT IS DEAD

There was a time when holding views on the political left was perfectly respectful. There was a time when those who held strong left wing views could even express them in a considered and compelling fashion. But that died on 4th May 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher entered 10 Downing Street. Since then, the new generation of Leftists have demonstrated that they driven by hatred, not principle, envy, not pride, greed, not generosity and this is manifest in two particular ways. They have festered in resentment for decades and on the day of her death, that decay manifested itself for all to see.

I read that the UK political left now plan a “party” in Trafalgar Square to celebrate her death ON THE DAY OF HER FUNERAL. This classy act should really ease the pain of those members of her family grieving her loss, yes? Before she is even buried, and on the very day of her funeral service, the left want to party and dance and celebrate her passing.

I also read that in another act of incredible childish spitefulness, and through the use of social media, the Left hope to have the tune from The Wizard of OZ “Ding Dong the Witch is dead” at Number One in the charts. It is being downloaded by many who were not even born when Thatcher was PM and the savage intent is clear. The BBC are debating whether or not to play it if it tops the chart.

I didn't say she was the sole cause, but her policies put a huge blow on the British middle class. Since industry has been decimated, along with unions, average people have less real power, so the only way they feel they can execute any kind of voice is through bitterly topping the charts with the Wizzard of Oz song.
