Why is public punishment outdated? I think it could be very effective and deterrent to potential criminals.

If the citizens always were reminded about what happens if you commit a crime, then they will think twice before committing the crime, eventually causing them to GIVE UP THE IDEA of committing a crime.

What do you mean by public punishment? Do you mean, like, for example, the Death Penalty in public?

Or whatever the punishment may be.

Perhaps, when people are getting imprisoned, they will have to serve at least 1 day in a cage in the city square center.

Citizens will not stand for such things. They do not want cages with criminals in the middle of their cities. It would drive down property values and drive out businesses. They will vote out whoever decides to adopt such a policies.

I also do not believe that public executions will do anything but cause a great backlash against the government institutions that ordered them. If anything it would be a massive boon to the anti-capital punishment movement.

They still have it to a degree in some areas. I grew up in Florida and remember seeing prisoners clearing fields picking up trash in parks under the supervision of armed guards. I live New England now and they have people doing community service picking up trash alongside of the roads. These things I view as reasonable. People in cages, I don't think so and I agree if there were public executions there would be a very big backlash and it would be the end of it.

This is a fair point.

Ya, you'd think that, but criminals aren't thinking of the punishment during their crime. OR, if they are, the punishment is not worse then the reward.

For example, drugs are illegal. This makes them expensive/risky business. This makes a very handsome reward. The reward is outweighing the negative.

As well, criminals are WELL aware of punishments, such as death penalties and the like. Publicly SHOWING these things won't make any difference. If it did, the dark ages would have eliminated crime with their public executions, right?
