Would this be a good study guide?
Common Law Book

Another one

Or is there another book that would be better to do this?

Yes. One written within the last decade would be a better option. Assuming, by context, that it is English Common Law that you wish to study, might I recommend [CLICKY->The English Legal System: Slapper and Kelly <-CLICKY]

The best way to study Common Law would be to go to University/College where you would receive instruction on how to understand law and its application.

There was an introductory course on English common law on Coursera.

They might offer it again.

I would check Coursera and other MOOCs like Edx or something.

There is also a Law and Econ course starting in March, I believe.
